The td5 front propshafts on post Feb-2001 auto cars used a ball bearing slide joint. There is a LR tech bulletin which indicates that torque loading up the standard slide joint caused a booming in the cabin at 2400rpm.

Just becuase they may fit doesn't necesarily make them all the same.

I agree with Offtrack and Slunnie.

    TVB000110 :- TD5 all manual and auto to 1A773046 and all V8 to 2A999999
    TVB000220 :- TD5 auto from 1A772047

So basically all V8's, Manual TD5's and early Auto TD5's have the same front prop.

Later auto TD5's have the different one with the different slip joint.

Technical Bulletin - TD5 Auto Front Propshaft

    Redback,

This is the Tech Bulletin I referred to:

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment...lose-53181.pdf

    AFFECTED RANGE:
All Td5 Automatic derivatives up to VIN 1A 720478

    PROBLEM:
AN AUDIBLE BOOM NOISE AT APPROXIMATELY 2400 rev/min, EVIDENT IN ALL GEARS

    CAUSE:
Currently, the front propeller shaft on diesel automatic derivatives has a sliding spline joint, which has a high plunge stiffness under torque. This may allow vibration to be transmitted along the propeller shaft into the vehicle interior, which can be sensed as an audible boom at 2400 rev/min.

    ACTION:
Where a complaint of the above is confirmed, replace the front propeller shaft with a new specification propeller shaft now available from Land Rover Parts.
The new propeller shaft incorporates a revised sliding joint, which uses ball bearings to reduce the sliding resistance of the propeller shaft under torque.

    PARTS INFORMATION:

    Old part number
    FTC5320 or TVB000100

    New part number
    TVB000220
As you can see, LR are recommending that D2's prior to VIN 1A 720478 have the older TVB000100 or FTC5320 propshaft with the later TVB000220 to address the 2400RPM booming issue. Microcat doesn't reflect this recommendation and gives the TVB000100 as the replacement fit, as per Psimpson7's information.

    cheers
    Paul

I have a manual, never heard of this boom noise issue before, I'm pretty sure my shaft was from an auto V8 as well.

ahh well you live and learn.

Even if a centre bearing has failed the uni joint has still remained usable and when I have rebuilt the only thing that I've changed has been the centre bearing. The shafts don't need adaptors either. The big thing now is that he has manufactured his own socket flanges from cast steel which is stronger than cast iron and he has included the gear in it so that the centre bearing can be greased. Since getting these shafts I've had absolutely no problems, and thats going from an 11-12 life span on 1300 shaft and about 2.5years on the 1310 shaft. I expect that these ones will last the car now.
    Hi Slunnie,

could you give me the specs/details that I would give TW to order a stock length one?

    cheers,
    Serg

Have a look at the Tom Woods site, the details are there. Probably better than passing 2nd/3rd hand. They have the front shafts as a stock item and theres someone in Vic who stocks them at around $600-. They are about $388- from the states but shipping on these is a killer as they are over size for std carton sizes. For instance 4 shocks are under weight but over size and cost $300- a set from New York. The shaft probably same or more due to weight.

If you don't mind waiting I'm getting F&R plus much much more from O/s.

The rears are available as a kit to remove the donut and supplies a new flange/nut & seal.

    Baz,

I reckon "booming" is just another way of describing the 2250-2500rpm drone/vibration that is commonly reported on early td5 autos.

I run a TW front shaft on our D2. I spoke to Tom and he put me onto the local supplier who is Jeep Konnection (Procomp) in melborune.

they had a few in stock.

Tom was happy to supply direct also if I wished.

    Really good to deal with
