Starter Motor Replacement on RRC. How difficult?

Times has come to replace the starter motor on my RRC with a Bosch type. just wondering how hard this is to do if anyone has had an experience with it. Havent looked at it yet so just wondering if its worth me doing myself or paying a shop to do it and what would a shop charge to do it.

    Thanks again guys!

Nothing too difficult about it. Disconnect the battery(s), and remove the wiring from the back of the starter, remove the heat shield so you can get it out, then it should just unbolt. The bolts are a bit fidly, as the body of the Lucas starter is very wide, and comes close to obstructing the bolts. I used a socket and extension and got them out ok. The new gear reduction starter (OEX brand) I installed was a lot narrower & lighter, so it was a piece of **** to put back in. It now starts very easily. The only other problem I had was the build up of years of crud around it, so a good clean was required before I started.

No soldering required. There is the main power terminal - the big thick one that comes from your battery - this has a nut holding it on a stud - there may be other wires hanging off this depending on if someone has used that point to pick up some power - like a winch, etc. There will also be a small terminal that is the crank feed from the key switch - this should be a push on spade type terminal from memory, or a smaller nut on stud arrangement.

Where abouts in Melbourne are you? I can always swing past one day and show/help you if required.

    Cheers - Gav

Sounds good. im in Moonee Ponds but all the work i do is at a factory in williamstown. doesnt sound too difficult. the oex brand you fitted is that rated the same as a bosch BX109040 starter motor? Im only going with that part due to brand familiarity.

Not sure on if the OEX & Bosch units are rated the same - I used the OEX one because it was readily available, and with the discount I get through work - cheap. I got it from Ashdown Ingrams, not sure of the part number - I can check tonight - the box is still in my shed with the knackered Lucas starter sitting in it.

Williamstown is only 40 minitues from my place, so if you need a hand, sing out - PM me, and I will send you my mobile number.

    Cheers - Gav.
