    td5 harmonic balancer

I changed down to 3rd to turn off the highway and clunk...Harmonic balancer with 3 bolts attached parted company from crank pully. I haven't had any unusual vibrations or noises. 329km on clock any advice would be greatly apreciated. thanks Keith

that sounds like you have been on borrowed time at 329k, have seen them fail sooner

they are expensive but don't buy aftermarket, not worth it imo.

Sorry to hear your bad news.
Quick question...has the centre bolt come loose? It's happened to a few.

    I wouldn't be driving it.
The crank could get damaged if the harmonic is loose.
It also drives the belt so..
-No alt is also no vachume to the brakes.
    -No power steering.
-And the water pump drives off the rear of the power steering pump so you may overheat it.
    Cheers, Kyle

The centre bolt seems tight, the engine idles with no aparent vibrations, is this common or am I just lucky?

Did have a catastrophic cascade failure from duff TD5 HB. Serpentine belt, Alternator engine bracket (no OEM spares in country) and of course the Balancer itself!

Reckon I had 40 000km warning, but at the time didn't know. Small tapping, just behind and slightly out of sync with the diesel rattle/knock at idle. Spent $100s trying to have it traced when I couldn't.

Ended up accepting that the tapping was just a developed characteristic of that engine. The Ah! Ha! moment came after the HB had been changed out. Tapping gone! Idled smooth as a babies bum

The out of sync tap is best heard with the bonnet just opened about 300mm.

    Cheers

Have a read through this post and check the links.

Do you still have the balancer ring?
If so is the threads ok(or repairable)?
If you find a second hand one check the bearing before fitting,(see link)
I have only clocked a few thousand ks since rebuilding mine but so far so good

I removed mine because it was jumping around at idle and then left it off for the next 30,000 kms, only refitting it when selling.
