Couldn't agree more mate. Camped in the rooftop tent outside strangy's house right now, after using his tools and his help this evening. Hope I get the opportunity to return the favour to someone someday.
Well it's been a busy and productive evening. Got back to the Defender once it cooled off a bit, and was beginning to think that Blknight's guess was the right one, that the timing had slipped, but it didn't fit everything that was going on, so lifted out the pistons. All bar one piston had the rings baked tight into them, and the oil seal was shot on #4 piston, which explains the blowback through the oil. I'm guessing that the piston with the failed seal and baked rings was the one that was knocking.
Other than that there doesn't seem to be any other issues - big end bearings are good, the bore is fine, pistons are unmarked, and the rings haven't lost their spring, they're just coked tight in place. A lot of soaking and cleaning in thinners, new oil ring, and reassembly, and they are good to go. Last job done was to drop the piston assemblies back in, and it feels noticeably snugger in the cylinder, as I would expect them to be. Too dark to do anything more tonight, but need to torque everything up in the big end tomorrow, need to get to Sutton motors and get a new head gasket, and reassemble. We'll see what the outcome is then.
Question though - would a blown turbo (which was the initial problem or so I thought) burn oil so much that once it made its way back into the engine, it would coke up the pistons like that????
