You could end up being snooked behind the eight ball but it is worth a try, the other paint that I have used beside aluminium paint is the potbelly black that is used on stoves.
But I used those paint's on a old low compression engine's with a cast iron head.
you can give it a try, but if you ask that 300 TDi for some power ---- !!!
If you are still wanting to be heading back to Melbourne, see if you can travel in a convoy with someone, just in case.
.
I have used spray pack gasket cement on used gaskets with sucess.
The can I have at the moment is ACL Hylomar gasket jointing compound (spray can).
Good luck Mike.

I think the key issue here is cylinder pressures. I would be very hesitant to do this on a turbocharged diesel engine. Of course you could try it 'N/A'...:D.
To reduce boost and output is relatively easy.
Firstly, rmove and plug the line from the boost compensator on top of the injector pump, then unscrew main fuel screw about 1 whole turn, making note where it was first.
On a 200 and 300Tdi engine this drastically underfuels them, without fuel it can't build much boost, it will be very gutless but will help protect the fire rings from leaking.
Good luck.

so long as you dont mind upsetting the greser who is going to pull it apart.
get some 2 pack araldite and copper coat
mix one part of the araldire and the copper coat then mix in part b of the araldite and paint on.
you need to work fast and apply sparingly to both sides of the gasket keeping reasonably clear of the oil gallaries and the coolant jacketes
coppercoat alone if you underpower it will get you about 1000K if you're lucky.\
if you go the painting route, I suggest using exhaust paint or the potbelly paint and working quickly at night so you can clamp the gasket while its still not set. Put the gasket it with the paint on and goto the first setting on the head bolts, wait 20 minutes between each stage of angling the head bolts.
I did it to a 200tdi, it was ok 2000k later when we removed the head to do it properly.

Its only got to make 2305.7km:)
