Ok, so the way I've costed the job is as follows:
New head
top end gasket set
bottom end gasket set
head gasket
water pump
head bolts
set of new piston+ring assemblies
big end + main bearings + camshaft bearings
All of the above around $1100 delivered from paddocks.
on top of that:
bores machined
block skimmed (if required)
crank ground (if required)
Camshaft bearings replaced
All of the above $500 ish (I have only enquired about bore machining specifically)
Allowing $400 for unexpected items brings the total to $2000 for the rebuild. Is there anything significant I have missed?
I guess it depends on your veiw point.....if it were me and I were going to that trouble, id look at things like a new radiator, turbo check and service. Injection pump service. What about vacuum pump? are they not a weak point???
Depending on the gasket kit you may need to buy the rear main (upgraded two piece with seal guide) separate to the kit
That will get you running again but since you will have taken all the other bits off?
Will you re-use the vac pump, fuel lift pump or put new ones on? Much easier to replace on the engine stand!
I wouldnt buy stuff until you have taken the bare block, crank and cam to engine shop.
If they all check out then go ahead and order stuff
If any of the three are suspect or dead then perhaps buying a wrecker vehicle will be cheaper than sourcing parts?
Also I found most of the gasket kit not used. So many components are better attached with a good quality sealant.
Have a think / read what you will do with the T-seals.
The manual says to let them settle for as long as possible before cutting them to size and bolting main cap on. I let mine settle for a week or two (whilst waiting on other parts) and have had no leaks. Plenty of people had a bad run on the seals and use injected sealant... its one you dont want to get wrong as pulling the engine after you get over the finish line due to a rear main leak would be a bear.

Yep I completely agree, first stop is to strip the block mic the crank and camshaft and then provided they measure ok send the block for mic-ing and then machining if possible.
I hadn't anticipated replacing the vacuum pump or fuel lift pump. The fuel lift pump looks to be pretty new anyway and the injection pump was rebuilt by Diesel Australia around 9 months ago so is still in perfect condition.
The only thing I have forgotten in my previous list is the injector tips... I understand they are likely to now be out of tolerance having got that hot?
I hadn't really considered the T-seals, Haynes just says to replace them so that is as far as I had thought about it really.
New Injectors if you go down that route, impossible to reco the 300Tdi ones correctly.

I saw this on fleabay....
Land Rover 300 tdi Engine | eBay
My only concern is not knowing exactly what has been done and how well... despite what the ad says...
Parts are cheap over there... I need to confirm exactly what has been done, but the advert says the head has been reconditioned and the pistons have been re-ringed so I would assume bearings have been done also....
This is the other option...
