I got the olives nice and hot then locked in a small vice grip on top of a rag, not too tight.. lubed up the tubes, twirled them around and edged them off. The new one had the olive 5mm from the end of the tube so I managed to get it off pretty clean with only a few scratches. I put the old bolt on the new tube then knocked the good olive back on with a ring spanner. My motor fitted with new dipstick and tube, all very tidy.

I'll keep an eye on it in case it shifts or dibbles but for now at least - job done.

    Thanks for the pointers

Unlike the old dipstick the new one actually picks up a good clear reading and has three marker lines on it .. H | N | L | .. Not had an N marking before... My oil level reads bang on N.. which must stand for... Niiiiice?

I'll see if I can get them off clean with heat and gentle persuasion before my patience runs out and I go all out assault

If your patience holds, hang in there. It can be done with the heat and gentle persuasion.
