The problem is that the 80 channels occupy the same frequency band that the 40 channels do. What happens is that the channels on the 80ch are actually half as wide as channels on 40ch so you can fit twice as many channels in the same frequency band.

The ability to convert a 40ch to an 80ch will therefore depend upon the technology in your set. Some brands/models it is a definate no, not possible.

Newer models it is a switch already built in while slightly older models it is possible but it is a back to the manufacturer and lastly in some commercial sets like Kenwood, Motorolla and some Icom etc it is merely re-programming. e.g. I have a Kenwood handheld that now has 40ch on the "A" setting and the 80ch on the "B" setting. I've had it programmed this way because there is some volume loss if you are talking on 80ch with friends on 40ch sets.

We experienced this volume loss on our recent Victorian trip when one member had an 80ch set while the rest of us were still using the 40ch sets.

Yep, they do that.
Curious as to perhaps that was why no-one could hear me at the XBG.
Might have to do a test on saturday.

I've got an old Plessey MTR90 and apparently it can be reprogrammed, if only I could open the .dat file I've got on disc, whatever the hell that is. But I have wondered if I shouldn't just save up for a smaller new one with more scanning and so on.
