    defender or disco transfer ????

This one is for those who have converted their defender to auto. I have done so on my 300tdi defender and have had 6 months trouble free usage. I am now tossing up whether to continue with the defender transfer case or throw in a disco one for the reduction in rev's. I will be towing in the future but nothing out of the ordinary. Will going to a disco transfer make taking off harder or will the auto take the slack. When running the 5 speed with a disco transfer, when towing my small van i had to use low range on some occasions to get going. opinions welcome.

    Bazzle,

I would leave it as it is. The TC lockup will come in later with the disco box, if you are happy with it like it is then stick with it

All the ones I have done we leave with 1.4:1 high range. They tow well and spend more time in TC lock, which keeps the box cooler.

    Auto/transfer

    I have a Tdi auto with 300k.

I love it but the only negative is the Disco transfer. 1st is too high on any incline and the set up stresses the cooling under load.

I am looking to convert mine to Defender ratios.

It was OK with 235 but too much with 255 tyres.

By too much I mean inducing stresses I would like to keep to a minimum.

Funny that Brad, remember your old D1? We fitted Defender ratios to that for the taller tyres....

What ratio is behind the auto? Have a 1.410:1 LT230 here that's spare.. Have fitted a 1.222:1 to SWIMBO's Ser 2 Tdi but would ideally like to find a 1.192:1 ratio... Believe they are as rare as chooks teeth over here!! Have located 2 1.003:1 for the 'other' diesel project... and of course if you want to go really slowly, there is the 1.667:1 ratio option found in the early military UK 110's with the naturally asmatic 2.5 diesel.

    'really slow'...

Si, surely we would be talking engine speed, rather than road speed when you say 'really slow'?

With the 1.667:1 ratio the engine revs would be high and the forward speed would be slow..... Flat flat flat out at about 90kph from memory! Whereas the 1.003:1 ratio would give you about 150kph + in top against a TDi if it would pull it!!! I'm using 1.003:1 against a Spicer Gearbox behind a Cummins 6bt in a 101FC, with 4.7:1 ratio diffs and 255/100R16's (slightly bigger than the old 900R16's.) Should go well even though the engine only revs to 3000rpm.

I have a 95 110 300tdi with auto, i fitted the disco transfer case after about 6 months with the auto, much better in my opinion, i often tow a heavy braked work trailer with 1/2 a meter of sand and a tank/pump/hose setup, the auto is fine with the disco transfer. Must add that i have a 3inch exhaust and full front intercooler so maybe the extra power helps with the disco transfer. on the highway with spare tyre on the bonnet, steel bull and scrub bars and full length roof rack i get 10L per 100km. low range first is great for off road hill desent. I would definately reccomend
