This thread is almost as funny as waiting for the number 16 to be drawn from a bucket....

First thing was that it was sucking air where the inlet manifold joins the heads - so maybe you are also suffering this issue - this was a no cost diagnosis - they have a spray the is used or if you spray starting fluid around engine revs will pick up as the fluid is sucked in through the leak.

I replaced mine and then took the truck back and less than an hour on the electronic tuneup gear and all was good - $150.

So you can stuff around with it but getting someone to sort it for you is money well spent in my view.

another approach is to use a solution of kero containing engine oil and applied carefully from the spout of a pump-type oil can around the perimeter of the inlet manifold ... then engine coughs a bit and you see the blue smoke

Going back to the V8 'knock', once you've wafted some ether around the inlet manifold and eliminated leaks, this is worth a try... Mark the dizzy in its current (assumed correct) position. Loosen the locking clamp just enough that the distributor can be moved but not loose enough so it will move while running. With the engine cover removed, find someone who's game enough to sit in the pax seat and knows how to move a dizzy slowly.. Get it to the 'under load and knocking' point, and get said pax to move the dizzy left and right.... See what happens... Just a thought. Might throw up something??!! Incidentally mine (Bojans) has a rhythmic tapping from the dizzy area.. Not located it yet!

    Out of the frying pan...

Well I checked for any manifold and vacuum leaks - all ok. Marked the dizzy where it has been set, then backed it off a bit. Took it for a good long run up some hills in the warm weather just now - no pinging.

BUT, now I seem to be having difficulty selecting 4th gear..... It has been fine for the last 3,000KM of the trip, now it is hard work. Checked to see if I had caught the linkages in the engine cover, etc but I don't seem to have. 1st 2nd and 3rd drop in as easily as ever, but 4th is hard work. Once it is in gear, there are no strange noises or any other problem, just getting it there...

    Ideas?
