CV joints on a Maxi Drive

    Hello all..

I have recently bought a 92 Disco. It won't move unless the dif lock is in 4WD, the Fromt Maxi Drive is engaged, or the rear air locker is engaged. Am I correct to assume that it is a Cv joint issue? If so, what size joints to replace? I am told by original owner that stock size joints will fit.

Thanks in advance for any info/advice and hope everyone has a fantastic holiday weekend.....

I suspect its broken at both ends with those symptoms.

Given it has a maxi front locker, it will also have Maxi front axle half shafts which are pretty strong and given the lack of a real HD CV fitment I would guess its the CV. Depending on how the CV breaks it can also damage the axle half shaft amongst other things but probably just the CV.

For the rear, if its an airlocker I would bet its the half shaft that has broken.
    Cheers

With the transfer case locked, if the car won't drive, I think you have problems front and rear.
The front could be a cv or drive flange.
Rear could be a broken axle.

With the handbrake on and transfer case locked, wheels chocked, jack 1 wheel up at a time to see if it spins freely. If it does the something is broken on that corner.

It won't move unless the transfer is engaged.. In normal 2WD mode, it doesn't move. Engage the transfer into 4WD it does.....

This reads as to make it move you need the transfer case locked and at least one of the lockers locked?

With the transfer case unlocked, can you make it move with one of either the front or rear diff lockers locked or do you do you need both locked?

the transfer case does not have a two wheel drive mode. It only has 4wd open center diff or 4wd locked center diff. It has low and high range in both the modes listed above.

If the vehicle does not move with the transfer case unlocked it means that something is gone in either your front or rear axle or both. If you lock the center diff in the transfer case and still no go means that both axles have something broken.

the moment you lock one of the diffs in an axle then the remaining good side can move the vehicle. If you can get movement with either front or rear locked while center diff is locked then you have something gone in each axle.

Start with the back, pull the drive shafts out, your likely to find the short side has a broken half shaft.

The front is a bit more work to pull apart but so far it sounds like something has gone in the front as well.
