Wow, didn't know you could buy kits, I've been thinking a 6 speed would be good for my Tdi for a while but too much effort to do the adaptor myself. That just made it doable.

    It is available on ebay.....

Not cheap though. I wonder why there is reluctance to develop it by too many others?

it is not really worthwhile for standard vehicles as all it gives you is a crawler 1st gear and then fairly standard 5 speed gearbox ratios on top. The MT82 was designed for vehicles with no transfer box lo range. In effect you start off from a standing start in 2nd if you run 1.4 LT230 gearing. The tdci engines may need a low first due to their low torque at low rpm.

When you fit > 35" tyres then it starts to make some sense and then the $ don't really come into it because of other expenses.

The MT82 is a horrid gearbox.

As to the td5's 'special fly wheel', are you aware of all the kits available to put a solid flywheel on to replace it? That is no stumbling block. A custom in put shaft and bell housing is easy enough too.

Could be done, and probably quite easily, but I think its a horrible gear box so I wouldn't.

Yes agreed - all the advice I've gleaned over the past week is that the MT82 Ford 'box is a waste of time and probably less reliable than the R380 LR 'box.

    - The MT82 does not have a "bell housing", so it can not be economically customised.
    - I am advised that a custom input shaft would likewise not be economically viable.
    - The best solution (if the MT82 was worthwhile to start off with ) was to move/mount the td5 back to suit the MT82 which is easy enough to do in a Defender but impossible in a D2.

    thanks again

Have you considered the quaife 6 speed sequential ?

They are available from protection and performance England.

I have dealt with them before and found them very helpful.

    Or direct.

Ok this is the way to go - just haven't got around to doing the research - the ratios appear to be right although a little confusing on their web site. I have sent Quaife an email asking for ratios and prices.
