Work has recently updated my '04 2wd Hilux with a spankers new Ranger 2.2 with the 6speed manual. Truely does need the low 1st as the 2.2 has nothing below about 2 grand, (peps right up after that though) whether that's in the throttle programming or what I have no idea but but it's borderline dangerous in traffic. The Tdi suffers from no lowdown too though not so bad.No complaints about the box though and reverse is in the right spot if you have ever lived with a series. Assuming that it's actually the same box of course.
Agreed td5 is way better engine then ford's puma
?????,I've driven mine all over outback Oz and towed some big loads and the ratio's are without question perfect for the power curve, the TDCi/MT82 is the best manual powertrain of any 4wd on the market today,it's a shame the Ford/mazda Chinese ones are giving them a bad name. Pat
I concur with Pat. Having owned a TD5 110 and now a Puma 130 the Puma (even before i tinkered with it) is a more pleasurable 4wd'ing experience than the TD5. The TDCI torque curve with the MT82 gearbox seems to me a better match than the TD5 and R380, especially down low in the RPM.
Don't get me wrong, I think the TD5 is a cracker of an engine.
As for the MT82 being notchy, not compared to my R380. Second required surgical precision to engage when cold. If you don't like notchy stay clear of the 6 speed behind the VE dunnydore. That said I do think a capacity of 2.2 ltr of oil is inadequate for the MT82. I'm going to look into options to increase the oil capacity without raising the internal oil level (i.e. an oil cooler or external reservoir).
MLD
Yep, also has a funny gating system because of it, can't remember if you push the lever down or something else though...
In a RHD car I prefer reverse down and to the right, up and left only works well in LHD cars IMO.
Funny that the LT95 and R380 have it there but it was the japs that got it wrong..?
Anyway, I'm not here to argue, just have my personal opinion, and I don't like the gearbox, or motor in a Puma at all, td5's (assuming you got a decent one) are way better to drive IMO. No silly torque curve like in the 2.2, which I've noticed has made it hard for newbs to drive off road! And I've never had a complaint about gearing of the R380, (I tow with mine, even in 5th).
Cheers
