    Disco 1 Snorkels

OK so topic at hand is snorkels (I'm only saying Disco1 as thats what I have but it also applies to any other vehicles) been searching around lately at different brands and prices and unless there is something I am missing I think they are very expensive for what they are. Sure they could save you an even more costly engine rebuild but I am still struggling on justifying the price of one. That could also be because I have pretty much convinced myself if I buy one it should be a safari snorkel.
So have been looking into making one and they seem quite straight forward really as long as everything is sealed quite well I cant envision any problems but am wondering what are peoples thoughts on the subject pros cons and any advice you may have. Maybe you bought one and regretted it or maybe you made one and it failed am just searching for as much information before project gets under way

Made one for my D1 300tdi a few years back when I had it. Mild steel exhaust tube - think it was 3". Took the guard off and trimmed a bit from the back edge so the snorkel could turn and run up the pillar. The tube ran inside the guard and turned to connect into the airbox.
If using mild steel tube, coat the inside of the tube with some fish oil or paint etc before fitting if you're concerned about it going rusty (I didn't bother, but later thought it would have been a good idea).
Save a few $$ and buy your snorkel head from a truck supplies place. About half the price of one from a 4WD place last time I checked.

A mob called "Goannawhere" usually has full or double page ads in the Aussie 4WD magazines has a cheap (compared to Safari) snorkel kit, had one for years with no problems, Regards Frank.

Brought mine from eBay $125.00 from some joint in QLD looks great, fitted well, only neg, it doesn't come with fitting instructions, but did have a template, after laying every thing out,and after dropping the inner guard, and killing the dirty great red back, it was. A piece of cake
