Thread: Series LR & big tyres

I've been running 32's (235/85 R16 - well nearly 32")for the last 2 years with no problems, just had to adjust the steering lock to stop them rubbing in the guards. The tyres were originally on 5 inch landrover rims but swapped over to disco rims after a year.

To avoid steering lock adjustment could use Disco rims with reversed offset.

With 33", would invest in stronger 1/2 shafts. Didn't seem to need to alter suspension on either series vehicle the tyres were on (a 2a with standard suspension and a 3 with military suspension)

It would be a shame to not use the good tyres, I'm trying to get organised and fit mine to our (new to us) Disco 1.

Not much is needed.

You wil have to do a bit of triming as they will hit. Other than that as recomended as you break things - upgrade (but preferably beforehand)

You can run up to 36inch with only trimming but they hit the headlight.

I was told I really should not run this size tyre with the standard 10 spline axels, only 24 spline would cope.

Does this sound right? Is it possible to upgrade the axels?

I've just picked up some 6" disco rims for my series 3 and i'm curious about the size tyres to fit to 'em as well so i'm watching this thread pretty close, thanks walker [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

I havn't really got tyre sizes worked out, what size is similar in diameter to the standard 750 x 16? 32" or 33"? The s3 is geared low enough as it is without fitting smaller diameter tyres as well [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

7.50 x 16 are gennerally only 32.

Look at fitting 255 / 85. They are about the same width but a bit taller. They are a true 33.5 inch tyre.

Hey Old Dog,

Are the disco rims 6 " or 7" (usually 7") Will fit lots of sizes.

7.50R16 are 31" diameter, nearest in metric is 235/85R16 = 31.73", just slightly wider at about 9.25" instead of 7.5"

Remember, the bigger you go, the more expensive the tyres too :wink:

The 24spline are a fair bit stronger than the 10ers. You can run them, but just be nice on the skinny pedal, and only apply it hard when you have to etc, nice and easy.

I twisted a 24spline almost to the point where is will snap about 2 months ago with 36inch swampers while giving is some go in some hard terrain. So there deffinately not indestructable either, but at $40 new its not that bad.

If you want to upgrade properly, get either Maxi or Jac Mac axles in 24spline. They will be just about indestructable for that size tyre. You will need to get the diff centre spider gears changed to 24spline as well, or fit later modle disco / rangie centres.

Your next week point will be the ring and pinion, but again harder to break and still pretty cheap.
