Why do you think turbocharging the Td5 is a special case?

Turbochargers do not know or care what engine they are bolted to. All they see is exhaust flow/pulse/temperature/pressure and all they deliver is compressor work.

I reported this post as you suggested .On one hand you have a Vendor obviously presenting his product in its best light .On the other you have a member very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject presenting the other side of the discussion ,To suggest what you have is pretty immature after all it is technical chat and is interesting stuff from both parties

Ok everyone - just stop and take a breath for 5 and listen up please. This thread is threatening to get out of hand with personal attacks which will not be tolerated.

I expect that everything posted from now on is about the technically aspects of the thread, and not the people posting about them. That goes for both sides of the debate here. We aren't going to stifle the debate and take sides, but we do expect everyone to play by the rules while doing so.

Play the ball, not the man. Take this as a final warning.

do either of you know what sort of setup a vag 1.9tdi has?

it is the smoothest, torque laden, most powerful tdi for it's size i have ever owned / driven. and i have had a few...

nothing i have driven comes close to it, whether it is heavily laden or unloaded.

just be interested to see where it sits in the scheme of things

    Wich version was it??

The 1.9 tdi PD engine is the most tunable engine I know, this meaning, the engine in wich you can extract more power vs the original figures.! Its absolutly amazing what can be done with them. The car I talked previous has being the fastest diesel in a 400m drag race ( near 10S) has one of those engines!

It's a Garrett GT1749V. So that's variable vane (V on the end), GT17 is the turbine size and the compressor is 49mm OD.

But then garrett got creative with the naming structure. My tdi has the 2.0 engine based on the same 1.9tdi (engine code BMM). It's running even more boost, torque and power. The new turbo is called a GT1646V, but there is no reliable information on the wheel sizes and I'm not pulling mine off to measure unless it craps itself.
This GT1646V is allegedly the base used for a lot of bigger tdi turbos sold in the US aftermarket.

The interesting thing about the stock turbos on most modern vehicles is they are used not only to provide boost, but as an active part of the EGR system. Using vane control to drive more or less exhaust through the EGR system. So this is why fitting a turbo off another production vehicle often isn't the best way forward

There are now more production vehicles with compound turbocharging. This is far better than VNT turbos for torque, power and fuel economy. But even if you can find a suitable size set they require a lot of modification to fit, some require computer control for change-over valves and the maths required to size them properly is intense (about 8 hours work for each case compared to 2 hours for a single turbo).

Ok Jose, you've had at least a few days to perfect it now. So where can I buy one?

Good to see people still wanting to work with the td5. I think it's a great motor too

    Thumbs up

While I have a VNT fitted to my Td5 I think a more cost effective improvement in performance in particular the lag so often associated with the td5 is a really commendable idea.

There are still so many around despite their age that I am sure there will be a healthy market for the final product.

And as said good to see someone that still wants to improve/develop them.

    Cheers Jose'
I am sure you have put a smile on the faces of many Td5 owners.

    Cheers,
    Paul.
