it should be possible to drop the pistons out with the engine in the car.
if the bores arent tapered a set of rings and a hone should get you up and running again without the smoke.

still......you say it smokes after idling for a while?

if its rings it should be smoking all the time.
smoke after idling is usually from oil building up on the valves from high manifold vaccuum you get at idle...then when you rev the motor it gets sucked in to the engine, comes out the exhaust and should clear up again.

Fed up with smoke maker ----i mean 2.6ltr six

G'day OldDog
Could well be worn inlet valve guides or worn valve stems, (didn't get prices for valves, Sorry) That will give the same simptoms as a worn out Holden red motor head "Choke in the Smoke on takeoff, and overrun "

Did you get my PM?

cheers

I got your PM thanks very much Rocket, I'll give Paxton a call when i get the old bugger apart and have worked out whats wrong. Those prices are far better than anything i've been quoted 8)

I originally thought just as you and zook re - idle / vacuum etc. so i replaced the stem seals which should've made some difference (i'm assuming) but it didn't. I was unable to check the valves for play as i did the seals with the head in place. What i think i'll do is remove the head and strip it down and check, maybe there severly worn or something? If things check out fine then i'll move onto removing the pistons etc

Thanks for the advice, you've probably saved me $$ if it's just valves or guides. anyone have a rough idea of the cost for new guides?

Thanks
Bill

I was sure I read OldDogs truck was a 2a.... :? You update your profile mate or am I getting more ......... in the mental ability the longer I (try to) communicate with society ?

Build that motor so in future the only smoke you leave after idling will be tyre.

did you say you checked the inlet manifold and there was no oil in there from anywhere?

not even the the engine breather? (blow-by)

if thats all clear i would then start looking at valve guides which it all seems to point to. it shouldnt cost all that much to send the head away and get it decked and serviced.

the compression figures you gave sound ok.
did you do a wet test to check the compression rings?

Jay - well i have got a 327 sitting in the shed

Zook - nup didn't check the inlet manifold for oil, but did check the brake booster hose for brake oil (none there). I'll know for sure tomorrow when i start pulling it down. The compression figures are ok? well thats something, i did do a wet check and they all increased, can't remember how much but enough to convince me that it was guides. I would've thought seals would at reduce the smoke?

Rocket - yup you did give me the guide prices, i think i just had a typing frenzy last night

Thanks for your help gents i'll post some highlights tomorrow night

Autopsy results
number 2 and number 4 inlet guides are badly worn but the rest are probably "serviceable", i'll take it down to the local bloke and get him to fit new guides as the valves all look good. The heads got a slight warp as well so i'll get it skimmed.
I havn't pulled out the pistons, but they have a certain amount of play at TDC but are good at BDC indicating some taper, also slight amount of lip at the top of the stroke, no sign of "ovality" in the bores so i'd guess the engine is half way through it's life. The pistons should come out easy enough so if the tapers not to bad i'll replace the rings and give it a quick hone, if it's too far off spec then i'll leave it alone as i won't rebuild the motor.
Which leads me to a question, whats the maximum allowable bore to piston clearance at TDC?

Suggestions Gentlemen?
