That's cause there is no recognisable 'system' for being trained or requirement to be trained. The whole "system" needs to be overhauled.
The chainsaw is a brilliant example. In a work situation especially Govt. the 'operator' needs to be qualified. That qualification or "chainsaw certificate" has no national recognition as each course provider is different so course content reflects that. Statement of Attainment they like to refer to it as... nice wordy way of saying I paid someone alot of money to be shown how to not hurt myself as I have no common sense.
Club idea is a good one..... depending on the size of the club though.

I have used my Warn to pull me forwards and sideways, lift, drag and staighten panels... and it is possible to pull a vehicle backwards with a front mounted winch - it does require a few snatch blocks but is possible..
I'd be interested to know how you can pull a vehicle sideways or backwards with a front mounted winch.
this is a gif I found on the warn website... good thing I saved it as I can not find it since they changed there site...

for sideways winching you use 2 snatch blocks... one out front and one on the side...
I did mention it requires a few snatch blocks 8)

Nice diagram.
Strategically placed anchor points are useful as well.

yep... i was pretty impressed when I saw it for the first time... you could position vehicles as anchor points but more than likely would just pass your winch cable under your vehicle and through a shackle hanging off one of your rear recovery points and take it real easy..
but seriously... all the guys I wheel with have winches anyway and can winch me out backwards if I really really needed to go backwards but usually we want to be moving forwards...

Nice diagram BUT
Given a himount winch has around 45m of cable and a lowmount around 30m (assuming steel which the majority have). To put that recovery into effect other than the 8 snatch blocks required there are 9 runs of cable which allows roughly 3 or 4 metres each (last time I looked my Defender was more than 3 m long) - nothing is going to move very far.
or am I being too practical :?

as I said this is all theoretical... not very practical.. i.e. yes you would need an extension of some sorts and tons of snatch blocks and correctly place mounting points...
If you were wanting to do this on your own.. would be cheaper to buy a second hand winch and mount it on the rear than to buy say 9 snatch blocks....
but it can be done.. as I said it is not my drawing

if you were travelling alone and got stuck between trees and had to winch backwards you could.
if you got stuck in the middle of the mudflats and had to winch backwards with your spare as a ground anchor could you just run the cable under the vehicle and out the back?
it will be fun as it is bogged down to the chassis but can it be done? i have never used a winch and i dont travel alone....but there are always worst case scenarios which always get you when you dont have the time for them...

Alex,
I have a Big Haul which I bought a couple of years ago and have used twice, only once in anger, and it was excellent. I have since bought a Warn electric to cope with my new needs. If you are interested send me an offer by email and we can talk.
Roger
