    Adjusting Wheel Bearings

    I am a complete novice when it comes to anything mechanical but I am giving the wheel bearings a go.

    From what I have learned it is a simple enough process

    Jack the car up
    Wheel off
    Remove half shaft
    remove hub nut and locking tab and adjust ( Tight then back 1/2 a turn and then tighten 1/4 turn)

    Is this the case?

    also I have no gaskets for the flange but have been told to just use a gasket goo. Does anyone recommend any brand or type for this? For the time being I don't have the funds to strengthen anything so I would like something in place for if and when I snap a half shaft I have the goo there and can replace then and there.

    This is on a 1990 RRC

    Just use a known brand of RTV gasket cement like permatex etc, just be careful that when you have adjusted the pre load and go to do up the nut often the pre-load will loosen up so just do it a few times ubtill you feel its right.
    Oh and either remove the brake caliper or remove the pads so you dont get false readings.

    I have never broken any driveline items in over 20years of RRC/D1 ownership so dont be overly concerned with replacing with HD parts.

    WIN they are on special at super cheap I am assuming the blue will be fine. Or should I use the black because it is the same price

    There are about a million different 'gasket in a tube' variants out there. This is designed to confuse people. IMO, any non hardening silicone based gasketing compound will do for what you want. Wheel bearings don't generate high temps, and the lubricant isn't particularly destructive, so even common Silastic, such as plumbers use, would be fine. So, Permatex black is what I'd get, 'cos it's useful for lots of other things as well. Don't use too much. It'll just get forced out of the joint when you tighten it, making a mess.

    Yep. IIA"s would break axles on wet grass, so there seems to be a rep for LR drivelines being weak. Well, I'd love to see an IFS Toyota do the Camel Trophy stuff.

    And go easy on the flange bolts.
    If they are like the defender bolts, they will snap quite easy.
    Make sure the threads are clean in the hub and on the bolt.
    65 Nm for a defender.
    I use loctite 518 flange sealant, seems to work ok.
