Looking at possibly installing aircon in the perentie. I was thinking it might be possible to mount the condensor and fan in the FFR compartment - is this a redicilous idea? Obviously not as much air flow as in front of the radiator but I want either a wall or ceiling mounted evaporator and blower and it just seemed to make sense to put it in there, could even slide out for servicing and cleaning. This is for a survey 3 door hardtop.
Obviously will look at putting a vent of the door.

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I can't see why it couldn't be done. However you will be cooling a large area no one will be in.

Personally I don't see the point as they are what they are - it would be similar to me wanting to put AC on the 101. No, it's not much fun to drive around on a 40 degree day, but I have done and will do again. It's not a daily driver so it doesn't matter. If yours is, and it is important to you then I'm sure there is a way if you have the will and the money though.
I was in my late 20's before I had a car with AC, but I don't really recall wanting it until after I'd got it.
Couldn't do without it now in a daily driver though as I've turned soft...![]()

Thanks guys. I'm sure people with Puma's enjoy their air conditioning so I'm not sure why it's any more "pointless". It might be worth partitioning the front from the back somehow to not waste energy cooling the back - I have insulated the car front to back already for noise deadening. Yes there are still big gaps but it's a 110
I always get the feeling that people who want to add anything comfortable to their perenties are instantly labelled as "soft".
I don't have the tropical roof - so don't get any advantage there unfortunately.
I'm not sure I'd put the condenser in the FFR battery compartment; how would you stop things getting flung up from the wheels into it and still have good airflow? There's plenty of room in front of the rad anyway - can send pictures of my setup if you want. Mine is in a CSW too, so more windows through which heat can pass and more doors for air to leak through! Seems a 3 door is a much better prospect. I have some clear plastic cable tied to my cargo barrier to isolate the passenger compartment, that certainly helps. If you did the same behind the seats of your 3 door I would imagine it would be frosty in a matter of minutes.
KLR do a very nice laser cut compressor mount, if you need one.
Assuming that you've added a 110 hardtop and insulation it could be OK. The aim is to keep as much stray heat (and outside air) out as possible.
The compressor bracket from an '80s county would work or you could adapt the 28v alternator mount (I'm also assuming that you've removed the 24v system).
Generic compressors are readily available and a tame aircon man can help choose appropriate model, or I can look up what replacement was fiited to mine.
The condensor can obviously be mounted in front of the radiator. Unless you spend a lot of time in stop-start heavy traffic I would leave off the condensor fans until you se e how it functions (I have had them disconnected in the County for years).
It will be interesting to see how you mount the evap and how you duct the cool air. Some choose to mount it high.
Thanks Dervish - I might be interested in that mount - would this be needed in addition to the 28v bracket I already have or can I just use that? I assumed I could find a compressor that would do the job and mount up well.
Do you have any photos of your setup ? Sounds the way to go to me. What Evaporator do you use an overhead one or a tD5 esque under dash one? My wife and I are both tall and I hate the footwell space stolen by the under dash units in the passenger side. Also makes sense to go overhead from a cool air falls point of view.
My setup is basically a 300Tdi knee chiller unit kit-bashed onto the 4BD1, because that's what I had. With the cargo barrier isolating heat gain through the rear of the vehicle and a full length roof rack providing a semi safari roof effect it is remarkably effective.
The only part that is anything like fancy is the KLR compressor mount. This is the only picture I have of it off the vehicle. The two "ears" are bolted onto a old dead compressor that they have (pictured) and slot into the rectangular holes in the larger piece. They are then welded in place. I believe they electroplate the mounts now, but mine was the first so we just sprayed it. It bolts to the block via 6 bolts. The two slotted holes are for bolts that sit under the ears, so need to slide into place. The compressor runs off a pair of belts to the crankshaft using the twin belt FFR crankshaft pulley.
As for using a compressor that will fit the 28V alternator mount, I don't like your chances - it's a huge unit.
The evap/dryer is the 300Tdi unit, mounted more conveniently on the passenger's side. I made this mount by cutting up the 300Tdi mount and using some scrap steel to make the thing you see in this next picture. I will paint it properly one day.
The condenser is the 300Tdi unit, upside-down and back to front again to get the inlet and outlet on the passenger's side. I made the mounts up to fit it out of L-profile steel. I don't have any pictures of them but I can probably grab some if you want. The hoses were quite small profile to fit between the wing and the radiator, but they work fine.
