LT230 Input Gear Wear

Just checked the slop in t/case to gauge the wear on the input gear. After rotating the p/shaft and then marking a point at @180degrees or 30 mins on the clock, I rotated the other way and the take-up point was at 150 degrees or 25mins which according to me is a 30 degree area of no action. Also checked the slop in the rear diff and this is @ 7-10 degrees. So all up there is 37-40 degrees of take up in the drive train. Can the experts pass comment please.
We are going to Dirk Hartog Island in early September and if needed I will rectify (the T/case) before we leave.
Thanks Maggsie

You can only check the wear by removing the PTO cover and sliding out the gear, you maybe surprized what you see. I don't believe turning the tail shaft is a valid method of checking. The gear just slides out with a jiggle with both boxes in neutral. Just remove the cover and bearing housing, takes an hour to do the whole job if you are slow and a tube of RTV.

Forgive my ignorance.

What is RTV apart from being a TLA (Three Letter Acronym) 8)

Thanks mate.

Having mastered the PTO and now the RTV, the suspect gear inspection is also on my list of things to do.

If I were to remove the input gear and if its as worn as hell would replacing it with a new one help or would the problem be as bad on the gearbox mainshaft ? Perhaps replacing the T/case gear would at least halve the slop ?

Any idea how much a replacement gear would cost (I have a 200Tdi etc) and are the replacements cross-drilled for lubrication or would I need to have one drilled or EDM'ed to suit.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Normally both are stuffed. The new ones are drilled, if yours is ok you can drill them with a sharpened masonary bit 4 x 3/8 holes.

A brand new transfer case input gear is around $300, but most likely all you'll need to do is replace the two bearings. Which are around $30 at the most each.

What normally happens with high range is that they heat up too much and they burr, which is a nice way of saying that they melt the teeth. But if that happens to you you'll know all about it!

Cheers
Chris
