Well mate can't complain about the oil, however I too use HPR 15 diesel in mine.
Its too bad there isn't a sound thingy on this, you techno people would probably be able to translate that into english, then you can record and send the sound for everyone to hear.
best of luck finding the cause.

How old is your fan/serpentine belt.
From memory, a while ago now, the belt on my 300tdi looked good on visual inspections but at certain revs, just above idle I think, it started making a noise that sounded like a bearing noise.(metal clacking) I took off the belt and turned all pulleys etc, everything was good. Put a new belt on noise was gone. Put the old belt on noise was back.

Mine too had a noise that no one, even MR Auto couldn't pin point, it was a clacking metalic noise that was inconsistent at idle and above, I too was thinking tappets etc or worse 8O but as it was still under warranty I took it back to Pacific LR and they replaced the drive belt (serpentine) and the noise dissappeared
The belt was seperating in the grooves and was only visible once it was removed, the metal reinforcing in the belt was moving against each other in the sections that were seperating causing the noise.
Since then not a sound out of the motor, and that is with changing to HPR15 Plus which is a semi snythetic oil
So I would suggest looking at the drive belt.

Strange to relate about "ticking noises", but my 97 Disco 300 TDI is currently inhave what I thought would be a simple service. I noticed a strange ticking noise but put it down to a baggy tappet. Tappet are reported fine, but the noise was comming from the head gasket, no 4 cylinder blowing, but only when cool, as it got hotter the noise reduced. An expensive tick but caught before any line drawing by exhaust gas could take place. Might be worth a look, when you engine is cold?
Anyone know how often fuel injectors should be overhauled, can the be overhauled / service exchanged or do they have to be replaced?
My bus is on about 122,000 k's at present.
Thanks,
Shifter.

concur with the suggestion that it may well be the valve caps - which would be a cheap and simple fix. My 200tdi breaks the caps all the time for some reason which results in a noisy ticking sound...
