Mass air flow of Ranger 3.2 and of 300tdi air filter

Does anyone know the mass air flow demand of a duratorq 3.2 engine under WOT and the mass air flow capacity of the 300 tdi filter and filter canister. Or point me in the direction where i can find that info. Particularly the demand of the ranger as i can then search for an air filter design that will suit.

And yes i'm doing something that requires more thought than using the ranger filter box as it does not suit.

    Much appreciated in advance,
    MLD

Are you referring to the type of air cleaner used with 300Tdi in Disco I or the completely different one like air cleaners commonly used in tractors found in 300Tdi Defenders? If the latter type, element in mine is Donaldson P182052. Donaldson should be able to provide data on this. Looks like it would allow considerably more air flow than the original one supplied by Land Rover, which had some of the outer metal case solid rather than with holes all over allowing air through all of the paper filtration medium.

Not helping with the original question at all but something to be wary of is that Roverparts will only sell original LR air filters for the 300Tdi as non-originals don't seal correctly. Not sure if that includes Donaldson or not.

FWIW the Donaldson and Fleetguard equivalent seal fine in the 300Tdi Cyclopac style housing.
They are tight on the centre support but I've never had one not seal properly (and I've always been anal and checked with a smear of castor based grease on the gasket)

Mark, I used to have the airflow data for the Donaldson and think it should still be available on their website.
The plastic housing unit used in the Wolf is a better air cleaner again. It's based on Donaldson's later design air cleaners.

I'm loving the torque, power and response of the 3.2 atm. It spins like a petrol engine.

Thanks Rick, i found an old post (2011) where you quoted P772579 for the Donaldson Wolf air filter. Can i simply find Donaldson's housing to suit that filter?

Then it's a case to see if i can fit the filter housing in the available space.

    Regards

Mass air flow of Ranger 3.2 and of 300tdi air filter

There are online calculators for working out the airflow requirements of diesels. Not Ranger specific but should get you in the ball park.
Fleetguard have good info on their filter/housings online.
Think Donaldson do too, but i went fleetguard with my county isuzu conversion as housings were easier to get locally and reasonably priced.

Have you looked into the Donaldson Powercore ( I think thats what they're called) filters? They were designed to be compact with high flow capabilities but still provide proper filtration.
From memory they were developed for F250's and Rams.
Not sure what differwnt sizes they make though.

    Thanks to everyone.

A spreadsheet is attached with CFM at different rpm markers. Using the same formula Steve directed me to.

Western Filters (consistent with the Donaldson website) suggested the rule of thumb of 2.5 multiple of HP (about 180kw x 1.3 x 2.5 = 585CFM)

What i can't get my head around is, based on those figures, Western Filters said I need a Donaldson cylindrical filter box that is 560mm long, 355mm OD and 6" inlet. In the Donaldson PowerCore range the box is 450mm L; 360 D with 4" inlet. In the Cummins range the smallest seems to be the Series 1000 (10" OD, 400mm L) range with the possible need to step up to the 12" OD size.

It just doesn't seem logical and contrary to the factory filter units on all these modern cars. And the piping in the rest of the system is more restrictive than that. Surely I'm missing something.

Available space is at a premium which is why we are looking for an alternate.

Steve, as a yard stick what model number filter box did you go with. I know the ADF Perentie turbo filters are huge and too large for the available space.

    cheers in advance
