    Inc - I've tried looking for Morris Lubricants and have come up with a few hits which I'll follow through on.

    Diana - do you know if there is a commercial kit, as such, available to do as you describe? I can't imagine that Murray will be looking under his vehicle every couple of weeks to check oil - it just isn't in him.

    Another possibility is to totally remove his O/D and restore it to run without it altogether. He really only potters around his immediate neighbourhood in it. I presume that it wouldn't be too difficult to get hold of the necessary bits?

    1. Provided the seals in the overdrive are good, the problem is it chucks oil out of the breather - I am planning on putting an extension on mine with a small container that will drain back into the overdrive (with a breather on top of it).

    2. removing the overdrive may be the best idea in the circumstances - if in good condition it should be saleable, but keep linkage and brackets and drive dog with it. To replace it you need the output gear and the rear cover with bearing (both should be very easy to find, as they are unlikely to be worn in any old Landrover and are the same on all Series Landrovers (except Stage 1), and should be cheap. Also should use a new gasket and lock washer. Removing the overdrive should take no more than a couple of hours even if you haven't done it before. Strictly you need a special spanner for the nut on the mainshaft, but it can be done with a brass drift.

    Once again - thanks John

    I'll look into removal I think. I can see the nut you're talking about from looking at the manual (Superwinch). If I can't find the right tool I'll try using the old noggin' to figure out a way.

    I did the service on the O/D this morning. It was very low on oil, so topped it up after opening the inspection plate to see what condition everything was in. The selector fork was not operating properly due to a clevis pin the size of a small thumb tack being used to mate the fork shaft with the selector lever. It was so sloppy the fork wasn't moving full throw. Replaced it and voila - all's good. Topped her up and nice and quiet

    I made a tool by turning and filing a bit of steel and then brazing it to a piece of pipe. If it is for only occasional use it will not need heat treatment.

    It is possible you may need a puller to get the dog off, but it should not be a tight fit.

    When I did the Simpson Desert in the SIII I took the parts JD mentioned to remove the o/drive & restore the t/case to it's original state. Given the fragile nature of the overdrive, it might be worth putting these parts is a small box, (greased & wrapped in newspaper) when you go for a long trip. - If you didn't have to remove the lingages you could do a roadside repair in 30min - 1 hour.

    As for the breather, I linked it to the t/case (top inspection plate) and they shared some oil (slightly overfilled t/case), as I found that the o/drive pumped oil out a 50cm breather!!!!!

    A kit no I think it was a very one off job. The person (other than Hilton,) to talk to would be Bruce at KLR (one of the Pollard family) who may know more about whether it was Hilton who did the modification and what they actually did. It could be as simple as a couple of pipe nipples into each case connected with a bit of hose and some folded sheet to make the funnel on the inside of the t/f box.

    Recirculating the oil with the transfer box may also be helpful in keeping the O/D cool.

    P.S. Michael when I had Fairey's in my 253 V8 S2A and my 2 door Rangie, I did exactly what you said. A little biscuit tin with the mainshaft gear, the cover plate and a spare tab washer all sitting under the passenger in the Rangie and the rear toolbox in the S2A. The one in the Rangie was used just before I sold the car.
