OD oil is supposed to be replaced very frequently (every 1000 km I think), and i'm pretty sure you can change the oil without lifting the seat, but that said I haven't installed mine yet.
Hey all
Just a quick question for the Series buffs. My mate's '66 S2A that we bought last week was sent off to have the broken rear drive shaft replaced by his local mechanic - and at the same time all fluids would be replaced just because it was up on a hoist.
Question - at pickup time, if the mechanic says that he has replaced the overdrive oil - but the centre seat had not been removed to do so, is he telling the truth? The seat is a full bench one (from a Falcon or something), and is a beast to remove. I can be sure that it covers the inspection areas under it, and that it was not removed to do the O/D unit.
CAN the O/D oil be replaced from underneath and not from the top?
Cheers
Chris

Oh!... OK, well that's allright then.Originally Posted by RobHay
Yes he can change it if he uses a pump with the little elbow on it - standard for a 20L oil pump.
I'd recommend using Moreys or something similar in an overdrive - it doesn't leak as fast and it quietens them down a bit. Also fitting a bigger breather than the little pin hole one it it reduces leaks. I fitted a breather to mine and ran the hose to another breather on top of the transfercase.
Amazingly it went about 4,000 km without needing a top up. Usually they can empty themselves in 1,000!! So it's not a case of changing the oil every 1,000 as much as it's a case of replacing the oil every 1,000 - slight technical difference there.
The overdrive came with a sticker from new that you could stick to your dash that reminded you to check the oil level weekly!!!! That's why they have a dip stick.

Yup - I reckon that it was dry as. I'll rip the bench seat out myself tomorrow and have a squizz properly.
Thanks for the advice!
Hi Guys
There is a guy in Perth,Ian who used to frequent the black stump who modified his overdrive to carry more oil,the small sump is the reason they dont last.He cut the bottom off the casting and fabed up a larger tank and if my memory serves me correct an oil cooler.
He is still around,I bumped into him whilst on hols in Esperance last easter,a small world!!!
Micheal, make sure your mate checks the oil regularly until he knows if it uses oil. They can leak internally into the transfercase.

Yes the Fairey's oil can be changed from under the vehicle, using a pump (or syringe) and hose. In the diagramme from Fairey.com it gives you some idea about how they look
I seem to remember Hilton Pollard or Max Heinzel modifying the fairey to have recirculating oil with the transfer box. They fitted a little metal funnel inside the transfer box near the top of the box designed to catch oil as it was flung about by the intermediate gear. A tube from the bottom of the funnel then ran through the casing into the overdrive body. The oil then found it's way back into the transfer box through the centre of the concentric gears. I don't know if they removed the seals in the same area.
What they did sounds similar but less sophisticated than the system in the Rocky Mountain's RoverDrive which has an open window at the top of the nose of the overdrive and an Archemedes screw to pump the oil into the overdrive.
