Test for booster:- Engine stopped for some time, apply brakes several times, hard. Hold brake pedal hard down, start engine; pedal should go down further as engine starts. If it doesn't, no boost, probably no vacuum to the booster, but internal problems could stop it working, as could a blocked breather - not sure where this is, never had to worry about it, but it will be somewhere on the booster, probably with a gauze filter.

While I agree its unlikely, conventional brake fluid though is hygroscopic and will absorb water, this will then boil at a lower temp giving a soft pedal like air in the system.

Place your bets gentleman on the Dawgs brake upset, we have Rich at $20 for a cracked booster, JDNSW??

I tried the press brake and start trick and it did sink when the engine kicked over....but like I said come Saturday and I will sort it out whilst I install my new headlights that took 3 weeks to get here and they forgot to send the Xenon globes..
Rich, the beach will be a goer, I will take my lot aswell in our Disco.

    Vacuum pump

FWIW the vacuum pump failed on my 95 300tdi . Intermittent symtoms as you
have described before total boost failure. They are a sealed unit and not cheap.
    I hope it's something else.
