    Before I try,,to ask first

    Brakes on my Defender 98..
    1.plenty of pad
    2. Plenty of pressure on the pedal
3 sweet F.A on the stopping like push really hard to stop

could it be contaminated brake fluid from my swim on saturday
No sound of hisssing so I figure the booster is ok
got me a bit miffed so I thought I would ask first and work through the more plausible suggestions.

    TIA

    Is everything else OK?

Have you got the same amount of brake peddle travel (ie is it snagging on something)?
Is it just not stopping or pulling to one side?
Obvious signs of leakage (oil & brakes)?
    Brake lines OK?

Failing that, flushing the system would probably be a good place to start.

Sounds to me like either only one circuit is working - but you should have a warning light in this case or, more probably, the booster is not working. A vacuum leak may cause the booster not to work, and hiss - but it may not hiss if it is a VERY big leak (main hose off or broken). And another possibility is that the vacuum pump may have failed. The booster itself can fail without symptoms such as hissing.

Hmmm.... Come to think of it.... Checking out the servo would probably be a better place to start. I take it that it takes as much effort to stop with either the engine on or off???

I'm not going to have a look at mine now (I'm just going to bed over here) but is it easy enough to take the hose off an have a look inside? If it's full of water or leaking in any way, that could cause a few problems!

Actually taking the hose off and see if there is any suck with the engine running would be a start.

Test for booster:- Engine stopped for some time, apply brakes several times, hard. Hold brake pedal hard down, start engine; pedal should go down further as engine starts. If it doesn't, no boost, probably no vacuum to the booster, but internal problems could stop it working, as could a blocked breather - not sure where this is, never had to worry about it, but it will be somewhere on the booster, probably with a gauze filter.

Sounds real logical to me, vacuum assisted, I put a petrol fuel filter on mine, close to the intake, against the dust.......

    Hi nigel
have a look carefully on the booster around where the master cylinder bolts on to it. They have a tendency to crack.

Unlikely. Water is incompressible. Also, I remember Dad filling up the master cylinder with water to get us home one day (years ago).
