    Question O/head Console

    G'day All

Anyone put an O/head console into a 98 Fender?

As some of u would know, mine is a Cab Chassis and by the time I put the CD/DVD, VHF, HF, Speakers, rip off the rear vision mirror n replace it with a 100 x150 colour TFT flat screen for the reversing camera I'm gonna need one.

Any hints on how to construct one would be great.

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
Major construction job here, contact Multiplex. lol

make a structure of any easy to work with material and have it reproduced in Fibre glass. There is not much to attach it to in the roof so make the thing strong.

I bought my Defender with an across the windscreen type over head console.

It's handy, but it restricts vision a bit and the sun visors drop down to cover half the windscreen

The centre consoles are a lot better. Have a look at some store bought ones for ideas on where the mount (screw locations under the head lining).

I've only ever made ply wood ones in the past, but you can use some tin bent into a square U section, then cut to suit the curves of the roof.

    • Also make tin U section base plates that screw to the roof and then screw onto the console section.
    • Cut the access holes/ speaker holes... in the console.
    • Make lids out of thicker alum. plate and screw or pop rivet hinges on. The thicker alum will give them the structural rigidity to hold their shape.
    • Once complete, apply contact adhesive and glue on a 5mm closed cell foam or rubber, keep it 4-5mm from the edges.
    • Then apply contact adhesive again and cover in a vinyl of your choice, fold it in over the edges.
    • Use the crimp type plastic edging they use on car door frames to cover the edges (just get it from the wreckers).
    • A good idea would be to run a single power cable to the console and put a fuse box in the console (maybe accessible from the back seat) and run all your accessories off that fuse box.
    • Other add ons would include aircraft style reading lights & a map light on a flexible arm on the navigators side.

    Dont use tin!!!!

In a rollover etc, your head will NOT approve of tin that close by!

Plastic/Balsa wood is bad enough, tin is just fatal

I have the Outback unit, and it is pretty good, gives room for your UHF and if needed another radio and some storage, plus better lights. About $300.

I want a console one day but the money never seems to get there. I might have to investigate building one.
