That would be it. I am wondering if i should leave it in or wire past it.
I also have a large heavy core cable hanging loose from what looks like the housing of the regulator.
Not too sure where it should go.
It seems to get continuity with the +ve terminal of the battery but when running it shows a voltage difference of 12V which makes me think it is an earth !
    fun fun !

    Cheers,

I'd leave it - mine has run OK with it for the last fifteen years, the last eleven with an alternator, with no ill effects. Can't help with the large cable though - I don't have a stray end like that - maybe a query on the REMLR forum might get some help.

Regarding your generator, it is possible it is producing some voltage, but not enough to charge for any number of reasons. With the engine running at a fast idle check the voltage on the field terminal - it should be pretty close to battery voltage if it isn't you either have a shorted field, a faulty regulator of faulty wiring. If you have got this check the voltage on the output terminal of the generator with the wire off it (engine still at fast idle) - if you do not have over 12v, probably around 13-14, the generator is faulty. If you do - either the regulator or wiring is faulty. My guess is that either the field voltage is not getting to the generator (and it is producing some voltage due to remnant magnetism), or the generator is very low output due to an internal fault, possibly a sticking brush or burnt commutator.

    ahhhhh that may be it.
the field wire from the generator does not give me any voltage
if i have the f and d connected to +ve and earth the body i get the generator to spin which was meant to be a test to see that it works.
i was able to get it to 14V->20V today by adjusting the regulator but still no voltage output at the b terminal of the regulator.
    hmm...

Motor test of the generator is a worthwhile test - if it motors, it will work as a generator. Sounds as if you have a regulator problem or possibly a wiring problem. Make sure the regulator frame is properly earthed - this could cause the problem and the regulator (on mine anyway) is rubber mounted with an earth wire. Check that where it is earthed to is earthed to the engine.

    Cool

Thankyou everyone for the great help. I bit the bullet and bought a bosch alternator and fitted it with very minimal hassle. The landy now runs and charges just like it should !
I decided going for a new and better solution was the way to go rather than battle with old technology.
    Thanks again everyone !
