The 2A I had with a 186 could spin wheels at the lights, but cruised at 80kph & occasionally broke axles.

There are some cheap improvements that can be made to the 2.25 to gain performance, which are the subject of a previous thread.

I've had a Nissan 3 litre & 5 speed, but the woes that came with the adaptor cost me lots of money. Don't go there.

If you can afford a whole engine - gearbox - transfercase transplant, then go for a 200Tdi. This will give you economy, reliability and a gearbox that's much better for long distance work. The Series box on a very long trip will require frequent checks of oil level and the straight cut teeth on the transfer case whine in low range. These things aren't an issue for local driving, but get tiresome on a long distance trip.

Your Landy will be worth more with a Land Rover motor & gearbox in it. Once it's been played with and had organ transplants from other makes, people will be reluctant to buy it (should you ever want to sell it).
So where would one get a 200Tdi engine and gearbox??? and how much would it cost??? and has anyone actually done the conversion and seen it work???

I had this thought that seeing as the 200tdi is based on the 2.25 diesel it would bolt straight onto the seriess 3 gear box. Not sure how it would go handleing the power but it sure would be an easy swap. I may be completely of the track can someone confirm?

The series gearbox will not handle the 200 tdi at best they were weak. A conversion of 200TDI and Lt77/lt230 will fit in the bay and wire up to the series loom, has been done I can look at it and let you know of the pitfalls if you wish.

that would be great. pics, pitfalls, ideas etc etc of how it was done and whether any other components needed changing to suit (fuel pumps, diffs, etc etc).

Am I right in assuming the LT77/lt230 is the normal 5 speed box for the 200TDi engine??

    cheers

hmmm. ok. now that I've had a re-read of all the threads I pose this.

I've got two ex-mil series 3 (one with Holden - 1979, one with Rover 6 - 1981). The question is, is it worth restoring the 2.6cl rover? and can the engine actually be turned into something resembling fuel effeciency and good general use (top speed aint a priority). It seems that most people are not keen on these engines.

If not what would be the best to fit in the bay? it seems the 2.24 4cyl is the engine of choice, but I gather the conversion back to the smaller block maybe tricky, not to meniotn the gearbox connection.

Ideally I would seek a desiel - but which one?? Do I go the older 2.2ltr or a 200TDi (with bix and transfer case) or do I go izusu/nissan/toyo (ecck).

    any ideas would be great

    cheers
    Jimmy
