    35-36" tyres on a swb s3?

hi guys just want to shoot a few questions your way for a friend of mine
he currently has a s3 shorty and has just picked up a good deal on a set of 35-36" tyres and offset wheels to match his soon to be locked front and rear diffs what we are wondering is asides from cutting the guards what else is going to be needed to get these tyres under and sitting right
i personaly think he is going to have to raise the body and suspenion to get them under he just seems to think the cutting of the guards will be fine if anybody has run these size tyres b4 or is currently running them could u please post some details and also how u found it with teh likes of gearing as always guys thanks in advance

You can probably fit them with cut guards, but the problem that he will probably face is that unless he increases the track beyond what is legally allowed, he will be up against reduced turning circle to avoid the wheels hitting the chassis. He will need new wheels in any case, so changing the offset would be relatively easy - the problem would be making sure it was legal, and mudguard extensions are likely to be needed. So I suggest the first thing to do would be to check out what is legally allowed.

Considering he is fitting 35-36in tyres I think the roadworthy book has already been thrown out the window

I would have thought that tyres that size on a SWB Landy would rub in the middle

I'm relieved to hear that they are only planned for use off road. Wheels set up for a Defender will limit the turning circle on a Series Landrover as the chassis is the same width but the Defender axle is longer. This diameter may also make it a bit high geared depending on the engine type, although low range is probably low enough that it will rarely be a problem offroad.

yeah gearing was a thought he had and has enquired about gearing reductions for it. it's running a holden red 186 with standard series 3 gear box the fairly over drive has been sacrificed for the pto winch

They will fit with cut guards. You may also want to fit (longer) military shackles (at least at the rear) and they will probably rub on the chassis/springs at full lock.

As for gearing - fitting the low range and intermidiate gears from a Suffix B SIIA will take low range down to 49:1 which should be OK if the motor has a good bottom end.

What lockers is he fitting? I hope he is upgrading the axles at the same time, otherwise he will be hearing snap crackle pop every time low range is engaged...

standard axles are 1.1" diameter 10 spline, so are weak no matter what material they are made of. If he is buying ARBs, it would be better to buy ARBs for the later model 1.24" 24-spline axles, then buy axles and drive flanges from MD or JM (can use stock 24-spline drive flanges from a SIII 109/LW. MD sold series axles (in 10 and 24-spline) last time I checked, and JM (Jack Mcnamara) should too. You also have to fit AEU2522 or AEU1811 CV joints to the front end (in place of the stock ujs), and do some machining to get them to fit, which adds to the cost unless you can do it yourself. If he can track down a SIII Stage 1 (V8) front axle that would help, as then you just need to swap the inner axles to 24-spline and change the diff.

    IMO I prefer MD lockers...

Cut guards and you will be sweet. I run Q78's with just a gueard cut and shackles.

If you can get military shackles do that as well.

Your gearing will suck, and go with what ben says about lockers/axles ect....
Where abouts are you dude, I will have some Series Axles parts and lockers for sale soon.

    Dave.
