Octane rating is all about how much the fuel can be compressed until it goes bang and causes pinging / knocking.... other factors like head design play a large part of it.

So generally the higher the compression rating the higher octane fuel is required.

My old 97 Statesman runs 8.4:1 so std unleaded is all thats needed
My 94 Calibra runs 10.8:1 so is very grumpy with anything but premium

The D2 runs 9.34:1 so is reasonably high (hence the question)

Normally the knock sensor will retard the timing to assist "pinging" but this of course leads to a decrease in power and an increase in fuel consumption

    nope

Absolutely nothing noticable in performance or fuel economy.... just a few more dollars for each tank full...

You can keep your premium on a Disco II

I've had significant performance differences with other cars... but none on the Disco

    Everyone is right!!!!
The D2 initially had 8.13:1 or thereabouts, so could run on unleaded.
Even the first Thors I think were 8+:1.
however in 2001 or 2002 the spec changed to 9.35 or thereabouts. these require at least 95 octane.
Look on the engine number plate on the LH of the engine between 2and 3 . If 9.35 then you must use 95 or better.

Just to clarify the ratio (ie 9.35:1) is stamped just above the engine number.
