Have you tried ringing one of the LR specialists in Sydney or Melbourne (haven't dealt with any in WA)? They may be also able to give you some idea of what else to check.

I subscribed to the Land Rover GTR website (www.landrovertechinfo.com) for a day and picked up one of LR's technical briefings for testing of the ABS components. There was remark that LR are receiving lots of "failed" ABS modulators that had nothing wrong with them, and warranty wouldn't be supported if they were received in good working order ! The dealer has said that they have done these checks and everything still points to the modulator being faulty...

I just realised you're talking about a Defender which is the Wabco D-type unit (different to the Disco)

Still same thing should apply... I've sent you a PM too.

You could always try one of the LR wreckers.

9K is the dealer price try other landy parts importers should be a heap cheaper as for the brakes failing with the disco's and the 3 amigoe's even if you pulled the plug on the modulator the brakes would still work, you just would not have abs, ebd, etc and hdc the wabco D may be different but from all the sites I have looked at in finding info on the shuttle valve fault never heard that one,and if that fault could cause the brakes to fail I would think that there would have been a safety recall.

I should be getting the shuttle valve kit soon so will be doing it in the next week or two
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

It appears I was overly optimisitic in thinking that LR would help with this - just had a call from LR Customer Care advising that they were unable to assist because my vehicle was out of warranty. When I pointed out the numerous problems reported on the net, the response was that they "...don't see it as a problem...".

Am now waiting on the error codes to see whether the shuttle valve kit will help, but otherwise will follow earlier advise and look for a cheaper or second hand unit.

Thanks to all for the input and assistance on this one.

LR covered the parts for Justin's (Lucy) modulator replacement & the dealer picked up the labour.

I can't say I've heard of the modulator requiring replacement in a Defender. It's a different part # from the Disco unit.
If your modulator does pack it in, you won't get brake failure - just the loss of ABS/Traction control. There has to be a failsafe mode which is what you'll have in that instance.

If you buy one from the stealer, please come and see me first. You must have way toooo much money to want to pay that.

I would do one of 3 things

    1. Look out on ebay for one ( I purchase a 2004 ABS modulator for $150 US )

    2. Purchase one from the UK. because you are not UK citizen you don't pay their VAT and keep your import close to or under $1000 and you don't pay import tax.

    3. Look at getting it repaired.

I would rather sell my car than pay that kind of money to the stealer

Thanks Scott. I mentioned Lucy's replacement to LR Customer Care and their response was that every case was dealt with on it's merits and in my case the warranty had expired and so they were unable to assist... Goof news about the brakes, I figured it being an add-on system that the normal brakes would continue to work.

I did have one other (horrible) thought - if the ABS isn't working but the normal brakes are, si the car still roadworthy ?

Been off air for a bit - just come out of hospital after a back attack. Very strongly recommend you all have fun while you can - I'm not looking forward to getting old(er) !

Anyway, after managing to source a new ABS Modulator (although not genuine) from the UK for about $2,300 landed (quite a saving on the LR quote of $8,000), I thought I'd wait for the dealer invoice and test results, which arrived while I was flat out in hospital. Might need to go back after reading it - Description - "Checked ABS and T/C for fault codes, found 1 fault Code # 11.4 - Shuttle Valve Switch Electrical Failue.".

As I thought that all you had to to to find these codes was connect the test machine and read off the result, does anyone think the price of $590 is a bit over the top ?? No other work is listed on the invoice...
