Good question. I just always put a little bit in the bottom!
Gday guys
I have a 85 rangie with 1 3.5 runin on pety/gas and need to know a bit about the carbis there the std cd's with gas rings fitted to em ...
How full should the dash pots be ive put sum oil in em but am not sure how much should be in there ..
If they are to full does it slow the slide in the body to moove slower as it has trouble getin off the line wel on gas and i think the slides may be stickin down till it gets good vacume as once its crusing its ok but put ya fot down and it coughs and farts ...
Could this be from sticky slides ?????
Cheers guys

Good question. I just always put a little bit in the bottom!
From memory about an inch below the top.
when you've filled it don't screw the damper pistons back in and give it a rev, the pistons should then rise and fall.
You should be able to see if they are sticking, no movement is a good indicator of a tear/hole in the diapragm. Mind you it would also show up when driving inless its just a pin hole.

G'day Lokka![]()
I think that the Dash Pots should be filled to within 1" (25mm) of the top, with LIGHT OIL I.E. 10 grade, if that doesn't work, I would also be checking the Auto Advance Diaphragm as that is a classic sign of a dead or dying auto advance, the is a company in Qld that does Diaphragm recos, they are called > www.advancediaphragmoptions.com I hope that is of some help![]()
cheers
Thanks guys ive found my rangie bible and now know that i have overfilled em so out with the trusty hipodermic n suck sum out n see how she goes ...
And for the record the good book states that you unscrew the dampeners then lift the slide up in the carb with finger/tool and the oil level should be 6mm from the top of the piston ....

My manual has the following text:
"The oil level is correct, when utilising the damper as a dipstick it's threaded plug is 6mm above the dashpots and resistance is felt".
So you push the plug in until resistance is felt.
This has to be done a couple of times after filling, to get the oil inside the chamber.
It's full when the bottom of the threaded section of the plug is 6mm above the top of housing.
If its like any I have had, it will only stay that way for 5 minutes!
I do not think its in any way crucial or exact.
I used to fill it enough so that when you pushed the piston in ,none came out the top.
The more you start with the slower it empties.

One of mine was dry the other day, that carby wouldnt work at all. I couldnt work out why it was running so badly. Running wasnt the word, it had almost no power at all. I must have emptied it when I pulled the carby off to free a stuck needle and seat and forgot to fill it......
Also, I suspect that when running on gas they dont need oil/plunger doesnt need to rise as they only rely on the throttle butterfly.
I fill mine (84 Ranga) till it comes out the top. Screw the plunger back in and drive it.
No worries.![]()
