Angry I've Had it ..... my D2 sucks and so does the Stealer

The old dreaded brake squeal, followed by the ABS/TC lights.

    Rant ON.....

When will LR do something about the system flaw in their ABS computer on the D2?

I am fed up with having these nuisance faults causing me to drive my vehicle with reduced ABS and TC simply because of their inadequate design being susceptable to brake squeals.

Equally I am ****ed off with the local Stealer treating me with the standard "Well we can book you in on thursday but it might take a while.....we have to interrogate the system, do an inspection ......... scratch our arses...... feed the trained monkey..... and then hit the erase button" when I have clearly identified that I only require the ABS computer to have the faults cleared. This process requires one hand held unit and one trained monkey for less than 5 minutes. I would have even been happy to forgo the trained monkey and do it myself...... but no......

I would never purchase a LR again after this one. As much as I enjoy the vehicle, the Stealer service cost and "experience" has left me jaded.

Please note that I only use Genuine parts for the brakes and now service the car myself to a higher standard than provided previously by the stealers.

    Rant Off.

Is there a modified ABS computer or someone out there who can remove the "hard set" function of this particular fault from the system so that this fault is easy to reset?

I have an OBD2 reader that reads and resets the codes for the emissions and engine, but will not reset the SLABS/BCU.

I shall now go and quietly sulk somewhere until I manage to go to another stealer to reset the codes.

    Having a bad day.....
    Thanks for the vent

    ive had it ....my d2

I had problems with the ecu not talking to the auto gearbox computer..on a number of occasion in my 2000 disco td5. Having to limp into the service centre to have it all reset p....ed me off. So I fixed the probleb myself. I sold the disco and bought a 98 defender.. NO COMPUTERS!!!. I get equal or better k/l now .Miss some creature comforts but I have peace of mind on outback trips.

    Red face

the dreaded three amigoes,Alot of people reckon that the brake squeal does not make the lights come on it is just an excuse that the dealers use, I have fixed my modulator the lights have been off for six weeks and 7000km so far and I use after market brake pads and rotors check out and have a look at this http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread...=shuttle+valve you are better off not going to the dealers as many do not know what they are doing, there are some good ones in the stealer network just finding them is hard.

Every time I took mine to the dealer I always checked their work and once it was out of warranty did all the work myself
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

I've run EBC pads and rotors for years now and the only problems I've had with an ABS sensor so far I'm pretty sure came from the clunk when my springs dislocated. These pads never squeel, though I've not been able to get a rear set of EBC 2000 series this time and have only just put in a set of rear Lucas pads that do have a light squeel in them. It'll be interesting to see if a sensor goes bad with these pads.

the brake pad squeel causing abs/tc faults is not limited to landrovers, toymotas and mitsus do it to but they do it with a difference... When there warning lights come one (this is not on all models) for what ever reason other than to say that the system is now working (ie a wheel is trying to spin or slip) then the system is not working... With the system thats in rovers (well big reds does it) if the light comes on for one faulty sensor (brake squeal fault or it was disconnected to see if it would still work) then all other parts of the system will still try to work as best they can.

I know what Id rather have...

The vehicles I used for comparison were big red, the inlaws gxl cruiser and a friend whose been swearing and cursing his mitsu cause its given him nothing but problems...

on that note.. If you fix the fault the light goes out in both the vehicles I tested BUT the brain box maintains the fault in a log for later inspection..

    Unhappy

    Fellas,

Thanks for the comments. It really sh!ts me how these great vehicles can become undone with just one stupid design flaw.

As for the reason for the lights, it is the squeal and not the modulator, unless the modulator caused the squeal. The light came on just as I was turning and braking during a 3 point turn. I am not sure why but the FR wheel and sensor is alway the culprit. I have even used anti-squeal compound.

I want to crack the code and hook up my PC to the car to work this out but need to do some research on the proprietry code used by LR or is it wabco?

I am interested if anyone has done any research on this.

Next brake change I am going to go EBC gear with slotted & dimpled rotors. I need a bit more braking when I run the 32" BFG MT's.

As for visiting KLR, they are a bit out of my way. I spoke to Graeme Cooper and they said $50 to reset the lights. I suppose that is only fair as they don't have the same obligation as the dealer with regards to known issues.

You wont get any happyness from EBC now. They haven't got any of the good 2000 series pads left and EBC overseas at this stage wont send any over - probably stopped manufacturing them for 4WD's. You wont be happy with the 6000 series 4X4 green pads. I've just put pads in that I bought at Xmas, but when they wear out if EBC are not importing the 2000 series pads again then I'll change over to Bendix.

I believe Redback posted a reset sequence on here or Exploroz a few weeks back. By turning the ignition on and off, locking and unlocking a certain way, this resets the ABS lights. Worth a go.
