It's actually simpler than that..
Just fill the gearbox and transfer up level to the filler plugs. After a few thousand k's, let the box cool and undo the filler (not drain) plugs. If a lot of oil comes out of one filler, see how much oil the other filler needs to top back up.
I used to see my transfer case overfill as the oil pumped from the gearbox into the transfer. Had a two seals fitted back to back between the transfer and gearbox to stop this when the box was overhauled.
