As another option, someone may have had a hose on it to make it easier to fill the gearbox as it's not the easiest filler to get to.
That used to be a common bodge to stop the gearbox (IIRC) pumping all its oil into the transfer (or vice versa) when one overfilled it would drain back to the other through the 'balance' pipe.

Maybe problem was solved and half removed or replaced.

I'm hoping that because of the white in one case and not the other that the problem was fixed.

Is there a method to tell if this is still happening, (the oil seal thing)?

Is it as easy as filling the cases then draining them after a period and measure what comes out, or is it not that simple?

    It's actually simpler than that..

Just fill the gearbox and transfer up level to the filler plugs. After a few thousand k's, let the box cool and undo the filler (not drain) plugs. If a lot of oil comes out of one filler, see how much oil the other filler needs to top back up.

I used to see my transfer case overfill as the oil pumped from the gearbox into the transfer. Had a two seals fitted back to back between the transfer and gearbox to stop this when the box was overhauled.
