Perhaps it is a simple repair after all,
from your description and it sounds like a hollow sounding noise, could very well be the idler pulley in the rubber band housing(timing belt) mine was making a similar sort of noise before I had the belt and ancilliary bits replaced, after the belt was done the noise disappeared.
    just a suggestion,

My TDI had a ride on a tilt tray under warranty after the stealer failed to tighten up the water pump pulley bolts. Road service diagnosed that as big ends as well.
Might be worth checking if you haven't already.

    Camel,
I think he said it was the disco, tdi with 100k on the clock, makes me think it is an idler bearing or similar that has gone kaput.,
don't know maybe the simple problesm cause the worst noise.
    just a thought.

So pierre have you found out the cause yet,
i like to think simple things, but the knowledge of problems on this site scares me sometimes.

    Daisy fixed!!!!

Prize goes to all who suggested flex plate. Big radial (and curvy) crack from one fixing bolt. The crack had been fretting and the mess was extensive, so I suspect Handy hadn't noticed it until it became very obvious.

Tranny out, big bar on hex headed socket, new bit and reassemble.

Bad langauge score quite large; satisfaction also high.

Many thanks for all the help from people who actually know.
