Cannot confirm shell construction in the TD5 but early 90's defender is made from a compressed recycled cardboard/rag mixture which definitely wouldn't survive pressure washing. In fact you can break it getting it out of the vehicle.
Trimmer I used a few years ago recommended getting a small piece of old carpet and rubbing it on the shell to remove all the old foam. Worked for me and the new lining is holding up well a few years down the track.

A few weeks ago I hitched a lift in a very late model ford falcon. He was holding up his roof lining with drawing pins, so I guess it is not just RR that have this problem.
