With a 3 year warranty I think it would be worth it. If I had the $$$ to spare then I would mount one on the back of George.

YEP I bought the Repco job about 18 mths ago and it has done a bit of work particularly last w/e around Big River (Vic) where it recovered me, then pulled a Playdo and another Disco almost a full length single line pull without a moments hesitation.would Warn or Ramsay have done this any better? I have no idea, but all players on my trip were happy on the day![]()

Looks like I'll be off to ALDI on Thursday on the way home, I already have a TJM T15 bar - but will need a tray for the winch as there was not one fitted when I bought the car. I'll contact TJM to see what they cost.
I already have a large spare battery - a nice new 75AH, 630 CCA and 130 RC wet cell which should be good enough for the winch, and I'll rig up dual battery isolator kit.
I have a few set's of springs, and I'm sure one of them will be able to pick up the front of the car after fitting the winch, tray and extra battery.
We are planning to do a fair bit of touring - and if we get stuck, it might be on our own, so I look at it as "insurance" and something we hopefully won't need.
My Tdi Discovery only cost me $6K - not $40K, if I spent that amount of money on it, I might think twice about getting a more expensive one.
I have a cheapo 12000lb winch replaced the cheap grease with a high quality marine grade and have used it on several scary situations without fail....a lot better than a hand winch and greylandy..it leaves you enough arm strength to have that ****........ negs are the extra weight..but it is worth
it
....... and is still very happy with itOriginally Posted by Scouse
Check the cardboard box, has the Ironman vehicle pictured on it .... Reps on the Ironman stand at the 4x4 show also confirmed that they supplied the winches to Aldi.Originally Posted by LeighW
To fit mine into the ARB disco winch bar, I had to fit spacers (approx 5mm) between the back of the bar and the winch. Also had to replace the H/T mounting bolts with some slightly longer to suit. This was because there wasn't quite enough clearance between the bar(where the wings angle back) and the ends of the motor and gearbox for a cosy fit. Everything else is there and this might not be a problem for other vehicles/bars.Originally Posted by MickG
yeah that's what I thought .... I've used it heaps (for me and for others), because it's there and because it gives me confidence to try things that maybe I wouldn't have if it wasn't there.Originally Posted by Disco Thrasher

* note on warranty... specifies minimum 630CCa battery (I'm running dual batteries. 730CCA each)
On the recent Tallarook trip I had a problem when, under tension the cable pushed down beside the layers at the end of the spool and sheared the bolt that holds the back end of the cable. I put this problem down to operator error, as I should have kept a closer eye on how the cable was spooling. After quite some mucking about I managed a rough repair using a luggage strap to hold the end of the cable and get those first 5-6 turns onto the spool, and start winching again.
I've since totally stripped the winch down and repaired the problem and also stripped, cleaned and regreased the gearbox. I've replaced the bolt with a H/T one and also found provision for another (Emergency ??) holding bolt at the other end of the spool. This now has a bolt fitted too, and will be ready to use if I strike that problem again.
I found some water in the gearbox and evidence of moisture in the motor too, overall I was fairly happy with the overall constuction (it's not grossly over-engineered) and didn't find any of the dreaded alloy gears sometimes talked about (there is an alloy section on the endplate where the clutch parks, but this never has any load on it anyway). Both bushes and bearings are used in the construction.

Mine doesn't have the remote control (=simpler??) so I can't comment on it.
Have fun, enjoy your toy
