I think the type of winch you have/need will depend on the type of driving you do and the type of trouble you get into.
I have a Warn cause I need to rely on it in sometime hairy situations. My father on the other hand has 'cheap' ironman winch. Now he isnt into Toolangi mud bashing or anything like that...more outback touring and the occasional high country trip. The winch he has is in my opinion more that enough for his needs which will likely be a quick recovery if he gets bogged or something like that.
Not everyone can afford a you beaut flashy Warn...and not everyone need one. I wouldnt ever consider a real cheapy winch, but there are a number of middle range winches that I think could be fine.

I 2 have the Repco/Ironman winch. I think its very good value.
I once did an advanced driving coarse with Mike Smith. On that coarse I was requested 2 recover another 4x4 that was bogged 2 the 9`s. It was quite the pull & Mike said he was impressed with the performance . I figure he`d probably know a bit about winches, although I dont know if converted 4 the next Outback challenge
.
Cheers Dean.
Great Article...and Lara looks as Sexy as ever...![]()
So, in conclusion, is the Aldi winch worth buying?
Given that the pic on the front of the Ironman box in the winch article earlier is exactly the same as the pic in the Aldi catalogue (apart from the 'Torque' name bit) is it worth assuming that the winch is made/supplied to Aldi by Ironman?

I can see value in it and am considering buying a "cheapie" winch as I have the winch bar and also a hand winch in case I really get in a pickle. For the sort of driving I do with our club, I would expect to break out the winch perhaps 2-3 times a year so for that price I can see the benefit of the cheapie.
I will however be stripping it once I buy it and re-packing it with marine grease and generally giving it a once over. All boils down to what sort of driving you think you might do and how much you are willing to spend, but for me, for that price......sold
Aye, Mick
I'm tempted to get one even though it may not get used much at all.
But with a new bullbar getting fitted and a 2" lift getting done at the same time AND an LPG conversion scheduled very soon money might be too scarce.![]()
