Basically got some foam and carboard and made a template to shape to go acoss on an angle from just inside the rear door to the side. Once template made to allow for bumps in roof. Cut out shape of front, cut triangle base of ply. Attached front to base, made two supporting pieces to follow sides of triangle and attached. Cut out speaker hole, covered with carpet. Got a length of 20mm angle aluminium, slotted and bent at right angles to size of box and cut. Removed trim from around windows (plastic) tacked angle to box and held up to ensure a fit, marked on roof rails at edge. Drilled holes in angle and rail, drilled holes from bottom of angle to box, mounted andgle to roof rail. Covered internal of box with carpet for accoustics, mounted box to angle, mounted speakers. Cut trim to suit and replaced. As my first go speakers where facing down there is a gap in the trim for version 2, but will fill with some sort of foam rubber. Will see if I can get some pics when I get back home on Tuesday.

6x9's are ghey
just replace the front 4's with quality 4'' splits,(ive got 4'' alpine splits, crossovers fit behind the cd player, tweeters come up through the demist vents.) and the rears can fit 6-6.5'' speakers easy! ( i run 6.5'' clarion carbon splits, again all the crossover bull**** fits behind the speaker covers.) then i run 2x 10'' pioneer subs in my sub box shelf thingy and 1 400w rms amp, just for the subs. the head unit has enough power for the rest. the OE wiring is good enough no need to change it.
sound quality is excalent! but still packs a punch when metalica etc is selected.
cheers phil
Re the angle of the CD player:
When I was living in Alice I had a very cheap non-brand name header CD unit, and it skipped a lot. Since then I've relocated to Melbourne and put in a better quality kenwood unit (not a fantastic one, just the base spec that could read MP3 on CD) and its been great. Very little skipping, even offroad...
I recently fitted a pioner CD, in place of the factory radio. Does not skip even in the bush. Suprised me because everything rattles like buggery on the dash.

I've seen some platic speaker mounts which go over the rear quarters where the panel too access your rear tail lights are. Turned up on eBay a while back, looked OEM, but I can't recall ever bothering to look in a Defender to see if they had anything in the rear.
It's something I'm abpout to look at too though, and I like the idea of speker boxes there. That, plus an amp in the drivers seatbox, I think.
