    oils aint oils

What oil do you run in your V8 rover engine?

I know its a Toyota-Nissan -Rover thing but its hard to decipher whats best for a 3.9 v8

The last advise I got was Valvoline Dura guard. I went to 3 auto shops this morning and couldnt get it, so I baught Valvoline engine armour 15w 40. Ive Always been a Penright person but I just dont know what to put in it now.

So any bad reports is my engine about to expire?

Castrol Magnatec. For no reason other than the Castrol rep was a good bloke to me about 8 years ago.

I -hate- castrol oils. But it's a totally debatable topic. Some folks swear by it.

I'm a Shell gal. Helix mostly. For a v8 rover I'd probably be looking at something good around a 15W50 grade.

But correct me if I'm wrong! Relistically, the oil a motor requires changes as it ages.

I use Castrol GTX 2 in my carbie version. Seems to be ok!

I've not had a V8 rover, but my father has had 2. He swears by GTX-2 and in some ways the proof of the pudding is in the eating - he got 600,000 out of the first rangie and around 480,000 out of the disco. He drives them hard (pulling a van or horse float) but is meticulous on the servicing.

He worked in the ford engine lab in the early 70's - testing oil for Moffat's falcons: GTX was the only one that could take the punishment of a high reving, high temp racing engine (clevlands are notorious for being frothy oilers).

Having said all that - my Dad also believes in an additive which is quite "slick" (no brand names!). I don't share his enthusiasm for that product, but he will swear black and blue that it's why he gets such high mileage from the vehicles - for the record, I think its his careful servicing!

Last disclaimer - both his V8 landy's were completely buggered when he sold them, so the high km figures need a grain of salt!

Penrite HPR Gas 10. Comes out looking good after 10,000km and everything's running nicely so no need to change.

I agree, I've been using HPR Gas (since putting the RR on LPG) and HPR before that. The RR's done 433,000km (3.5 EFI) and has no oil leaks or oil consumption. I'd stick to the Penrite.
