whoa, did you pull the floor out, including the panel above the transmission brake ?

All you need to do with the levers is pop the spring clips off the diff lock shafts to get to that nut. Don't have to undo any bolts or nuts from memory.
Have done this in the last three weeks as had a clutch fork break, so did the clutch plus all new seals throughout.

A couple of tips, when re-installing the t/case, get a couple of long 10mm bolts (170mm+) and chop the hex heads off and cut a slot in each. Use these as locating pins on reassembly so that you don't stuff the (new ) input shaft seal. (also replace the intermediate shaft O ring)
You will also have to make a tool to remove the seal collar off the gearbox output shaft (this collar is a press fit onto the gearbox output shaft. The extension housing seal and the t/case input shaft seal run on this collar)

Hi, Rick130,you may have saved my bacon.By the look of things I spent quite some time today undoing bolts that only need undoing when I get to pulling down the gearbox. Now that I have crawled back under with a torch I see what I should have done instead. Thanks for that and the tip about guide bolts too.I expect success in the morning. Cheers, 130man.

Hi Rick130, took your advice and bought the bolts and got the t/box off and then the g/box.Things look OK so far as there is no visible discolouration to the gears or shafts.I am getting a professional opinion on what needs to be replaced. Will find that out tomorrow. The cause of the damage was a loose union on the oil cooler from the g/box letting all the oil out.Who knows why the union came loose? The t/box seems leak free and there is a small amount of oil in the bell housing.Next job to do is to see how the clutch is wearing and if the oil is coming from the rear engine seal.Any other ideas are very welcome.Cheers, 130man.

Gearbox update.Had the box examined by a LR mech and found significant damage to the input shaft and associated gear.Teeth chipping and wear marks indicative of heat. This is on top of the bearing damage and possible synchro failure. Solved the problem by buying a recon. box and am installing it tomorrow as I need to be mobile ASAP.Thanks to you all for your help.Traded in the old box as part of the deal. Will use threadlocker on the oil cooler connections in order to minimise the chance of it all happening again.Cheers, 130man.

Gearbox update. Vehicle back on the road. New [ recon ] g/box feels good.Reinstalled old clutch as there was no detectable wear visible. My oil cooler seems unsupported at the front end. Is this normal or has a bracket disappeared at some point? Is there any means of detecting the loss of oil from the g/box if something like this should happen in the future? Would a temperature sensor have helped, perhaps triggering an alarm to warn of increasing temp. in the gearbox? If so, how would I go about putting one in?Thanks in advance. 130man.

Rick130, I live in Dungog shire which I reckon is northern Hunter valley as we are due north of Newcastle.Go much further and the rivers drain into the Karuah and Manning valley instead of the Hunter.Where are you?Sounds like you may be near Murrurundi, perhaps.Cheers, 130man
