    AFAIR The nput shafts were the same length, BUT the shift rails etc had to be changed inside the box, as the shift rails etc in a defender box are different orientation where the initial 'ball' and socket fits under the shift housing on the Disco box. Very frustrating!!!

    Exactly what I found.

    The other engine option is the 2.8 litre Isuzu 4JB1T (stay away from the 3 or 3.1 litre engine). This is a popular conversion in the UK - adapter kits are available to use the 4JB1T with the v8 version of the LT77 or R380.

    With an intercooler and pump tweak, they will perform well, and without some of the 300Tdi issues.
