    300 TDi Auto Problem

    Hi
My Auto box is playing up

when driving and mainly pulling away from say the lights it will drive away as normal but not change up until flat out (4500 revs)then lift off and as the revs return to tick over before it will change up into what I think is 3rd and it is not changing into 2nd at all. its will drive normally as long as you don't stop as when changing down it will change into second but not up.

Has anyone had this and is it repairable or just bin it and replace the box all together

I have just replaced the oil and filter as it was doing it before and thought that might fix it

    Cheers

Next time your in it, try a light acceleration to say 2800 or 3000 then lift off and see if it changes up.

I say this as you want to eliminate a line pressure fault due to a maladjusted kick down cable.

After that, unless it is low pressure or a blocked filter (that it shouldnt be seems youve changed it) there isnt that much more you can do with a ZF without rebuilding it from what Ive gathered.

Someone might know a bit more than me but Im having problems with a slipping sprag at the moment with mine.

first step is to adjust the throttle pressure sense cable.

if its too tight it will change up late

If its too loose it will change early and work the TC to death, noticable by burning of the oil.

If it is to loose it will also lower the runing pressure in the box. I was told this by a repairer in Vic.

Does the box change when you drive it lke a manual? eg start in 1 and change up on light throttle.

Mine is blowing oil out the dipstick tube when working hard in low range.

Darn things are so expensive to repair. Nearly 50% of the car value.

not the running pressure it wont, thats preset forever by the pressure regulating valve, The shifting pressure it will.

ive done a thread on them just search for grey boxes of evil...

i had it fully serviced less than a month before you bought it and was told it was in great condition, so it should only an be adjustment thing....

you sure you have the throttle cable set correctly?

they wont shift properly if it is adjusted wrong... esp kick down...

I hope you never paid for anyone to change the gearbox fliud or filter as the oil and filter look like they have not been changed for about 150,000 k's . There was slug coated to the bottom the the inside of the sump and filter that looked like it had been there for ages (if not built up since the day the car left the factory) and the filter was wel passed its sell by date

Not saying you had not paid for a oil and filter change but check you garage because if you did they are ripping you off as it has not been changed for years
Not moaning about the car but a heads up for your defender if you are taking it to the same garage

But will check the kick down

Fluid was probably over heated, it can cause the fluid to clog filters and turn black and sludgy.

That tells me that it is most likely what Dave is saying, too loose on the Kickdown (throttle sense) cable and working the Torque converter which cooks the oil.

Try tighteniing it up a bit, the RAVE has the settings to do this, so give it a go.
