take heart get it right this time and it should outlast you.

Yes, that's the plan. I don't want to ever pull this engine down again. This is the third time I've done it in the 100,000km I've owned it.

Mate If I could get down there Id have the head and valve gear on a trailer for you and Id do you the heads.

I appreciate the offer. Why don't you live at RAAF Richmond?!

I picked up my 4.6 V8 engine this arvo from Davis Performance Landys.

    Work done:

Old liners removed, new top-hat liners installed
    High Compression pistons fitted.
    One conrod replaced
    Crankshaft replaced (exchange)
    Hub aligner
    New big end bearings
    New main bearings
    New camshaft bearings
    New high torque cam
    New lifters
    Replace welch plugs
    Modify oil pump
    New flywheel/driveplate and flexplate
Balance engine (internal, not external as done by LR)
Flow check injectors, new o-rings, replace injector filters
    Open up valve ports
    De-shroud valve guides
    Port cylinder heads
Port-match heads to match inlet manifold and exhaust manifolds
    Replace valve guides
    Replace exhaust valves
    Flow cylinder heads
Fit standard head bolts, not stretch bolts....

    ..... and assemble engine

Lemme see, was there anything else? Probably.

Now to install it next week.

yeah how much Ron? The way things are going (mines just hit 175k's and steams from the oil filler with an acetone smell) when mines due for a new donk probably sometime next year it will be far cheaper to buy another P38 that goes and use mine for spare parts

When you see someone at Davis Performance, can you ask them what they think about the "head studs".

I have been told that you can get a head stud kit. So instead of using bolts, you put studs into the block and then tighten down the heads with nuts. Apparently it gives a much more even pressure and less likely to cause a leak from an overtightened/undertightened bolt.

Thats what I have been told anyway.

I had considered the ARP studs but, as PhilipA pointed out, one can't easily remove the heads without removing all the studs.

Davis' use the head bolts from earlier model V8s, i.e., non-stretch.
