prep for trip

I have an 89rr and starting to plan for a trip from tassie, melb, adalaide, darwin, perth and home to tassie.
The rangie is in good mechanical condition (well as good as rangies get), my question is what prep work SHOULD I do and what spares are a must to carry. I will be fitting a long range tank (any one got one for sale), a snorkel (need one of these to please) aux battery.
What is the prefered method of setting up a long range tank (2nd totally indepenand system with high pressure pump and filter?). I dont intend on doing any serius 4x4ing but do intend have a good look around(well as much as I can in 6 to 7 weeks), will be chasing some fish along the way too. At this stage I will be traveling solo and sleeping in a swag. So mainly seeking advice on the long jepody of the rangie making sure it gets home again.

Looks like you will be doing a lot of Kms on that trip.
I would be compiling a list of contact numbers in case of brake down to source parts, eg BigJon in Alice Springs from this forum, Greame Coopers in Sydney, etc.
Also a list of service centres recommended from this forum.
On my last desert trip, major components where sourced within 3days.

That sounds like a top idea, How would one go about getting a list of contacts. Is there an area on the forum with such a list

Blaze I have an 89 Rangie auto as well and this is what I carry at all times.
1. Spare ecu (ebay$100)
2. Fuel pump external commodore type ($120)
3. Electronic dist module (?)
4. Distibutor p/u coil and rotor (?)
5. Airflow meter (ebay $80)
6. Top and bottom radiator hoses and length of heater hose
7. Brake fluid engine oil and transmission fluid (auto)
8. Hose clamps various
9. Complete set of tools sockets spanners etc
10. Gas powered soldering iron and solder
11. 2 snachum straps and rated shackles
12. Bull bag
13. Shovel and small tomohawk
14. Uhf 27 meg and hf radio's
15. Survival book (from police dept)
16. Tyre repair kit (sticky rope) and tyre pliers.
17. Fan belts (old ones as spares)
18. Water 10 ltres at all times
19. Insulation tape Gaffa tape
20. Electrical wire and Cable ties
21. Complete set of lamps, globes etc one of each
22. Shockie rubbers front and rear
23. Common sense! (very hard to find sometimes)

There is possibly more that I cant think of but you must do a complete change and or top up of all fluids check Brake pads, fan belts and radiator hoses, Grease prop shafts, check radiator and basically that everything works, as its better to find out before u are stuck in the middle of nowhere that something needed to be replaced beforehand.
Most times if you have on hand the basics you can get yourself out of trouble and get permanant repairs done when nearer to captivity.

I'd include the following spares with the above list :

1 set wheel bearings
1 tie rod end & clamp
1 uni joint
gasket sealant (stag paste is good)
set of filters
bottle of metho (in case you get watery fuel)

get your radiator flushed and your brakes fully bled sometime in the next 12 months

and if you've got a Bosch alternator, get a spare external reg & brushes.

dont forget fluids for the vehicle brake, gearbox, diff and engine, tube of grease, knead it metal filler, gasket sealastic, locktite, air compressor, the gardening tools, 24 hours worth of emergancy rations, first aid kit,

other than that most of my stuff is covered.

well with those lists of carry spares l would add acquire passenger who is mechanically minded to do the repair works for the trip preferrably ex-navy boob augmented series

Also, replace fluid in clutch. Brake and clutch fluid should be replaced about every 18 months and, IMHO, is one of the most overlooked service items.

I was on the recent trip with 'Defenderbilby' and fully support his post re establishing contacts prior to your trip. Also, making personal contact and having that list when something goes wrong is invaluable.

One of the most important items to check / carry spares for are wheel bearings. You can blow a motor or gearbox and still get towed to civilisation by a fellow traveller but if your wheel wont turn then you are possibly looking at a very expensive 'flat bed' recovery.
