Don't do that. The bending load you put on the pin puts it very close to it's strength limits.
A much stronger and safer way is to unbolt the towball and put a shackle through the hole.

    must be good limit,,
I've bounced BUB91 2 feet in the air and 4 foot sideways towing a 109 (9000strap single pull) with a trailer over a berm off the beach,, it tore the stitching on the strap eye---

    pin pulled straight out.

    Christ.

I've worked out in the past that 1.4 ton will bend a 14mm pin used to snatch that way. That's mild steel.
Hi tensile can be anywhere from 2.5 times that strength and up. But the problem there is high tensile are more brittle and when they go, they go suddenly and with a bang.

With mild steel you see it's bent and go "crap, shouldn't do that again".

I take it that soft shackles haven't hit your shores yet then?

I have been using 8 ton versions untill recently when they bought out a ten ton addition.
Much safer than any shackle made from metal.

I use a modified drop down plate on the rear of my Disco with a Dixon Bate jaw and last week pulled a dead BMW X5 for 17km through the dunes. With soft shackles you can pull with confidence knowing that nothing made of steel is going to come flying back at you through the back glass.

    Google Liros XTR Soft-Shackle.

these look like an excellent idea but the cost seems to be about $30 for a 4t shackle.
Dunno about the 8t or 10t?

I suppose we should consider what price safety?

I'm with you. I can't imagine what sort of forces you would be exerting to bend the pin.

I pointed these out to a couple of guys in the UK a few months ago.
Now they are making their own from off-cuts of HD Plasma rope.
Perhaps a few you you should get together and buy a small roll of 20mm Dynarope to make a bunch of em' up?

Just a thought... I know that shipping costs to Aus must be quite a bit + you have the Euro exchange rate to take in too.

    You need a better picture?

    Regards.

Excellent idea but we would need someone who knows how to splice the hoop into the rope
