it doesnt matter weather or not the winch is central to anything anywhere on the vehcile..
BUT as a general rule the closer you can get the pull to the center of the chassis in terms of up and down/left/right the better off you will be.
the winch on an R sereis mack can pull from the front or rear is rear mounted and pulls from the center at the rear or from the left at the front.
on an IMV (bush master) its mounted on the left side of the vehicle and pulls from the left front or rear but all the load is on the left side of the vehicle halfway along and at about chest height.
on the Fc 101 its the same setup.
the inter wreckers primary winch is mounted well above the chassis but smack in the middle of the vehicle. and when recovering via the boom setup can pull from almost anywhere. (including out to the side)
Ive seen yank a couple of yank baja bugs/dune buggies with the winch mounted in the cab on the right hand side and the cable can feed front or rear.
if thats any help..
