    Winch install lacation

Im going to install a low mount winch on the RRC. I have seen some really good custom installs where they mount the winch on a custom made cradle in between the chasis rails. The only down side to this as far as I can tell is that the winch does not side centred to the vehicle. Question here is, does this matter... does a winch need to be centred (horizontally) or not? Attached is a pic of what I want, and how its not centred.

Comments on the pros and cons please to this type of install.

    Cheers,

it doesnt matter weather or not the winch is central to anything anywhere on the vehcile..

BUT as a general rule the closer you can get the pull to the center of the chassis in terms of up and down/left/right the better off you will be.

the winch on an R sereis mack can pull from the front or rear is rear mounted and pulls from the center at the rear or from the left at the front.

on an IMV (bush master) its mounted on the left side of the vehicle and pulls from the left front or rear but all the load is on the left side of the vehicle halfway along and at about chest height.

on the Fc 101 its the same setup.

the inter wreckers primary winch is mounted well above the chassis but smack in the middle of the vehicle. and when recovering via the boom setup can pull from almost anywhere. (including out to the side)

Ive seen yank a couple of yank baja bugs/dune buggies with the winch mounted in the cab on the right hand side and the cable can feed front or rear.

    if thats any help..

I guess it depends on what and how. You can centre an XD9000 if you have the motor up against the chassis rail, or just a smidgen off it.

Offset probably isn't critical. You endup with offset loading when you do a double line pull without an equalisation hitch anyway.

Yep, thats what I thought, or else recoveries done on one recovery point would also be an issue (snatching).

I also like the fact that its very well hidden, so I may go with this design.

I am in the (slow)process of making a front bar for my D2 and raising the winch higher so it sits between the chassis rails it will probably be slightly off center but do not think it will make to much difference
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

The only thing I'd add is to make sure you can still see the drum when operating it... One thing I find useful on the Camel is that they fitted an additional sidelight (powered from the main side lights), over the winch, so you can see what's going on at night.

mine is off centre in my Disco, all seems good ! I am about to build a cradle and mount it between the chassis roughly level with the front of the chassis in my series 3 Ute (see my other post's, after this wekend I should have the cradle mounted and I'll post a Pic !) That will be off centre, I think when building and making a cradle as said needs to be as centre to the chassis as possible and make sure its stong enough !
